Prepare your ax because 12 survival games are waiting for us in 2023.
Punch a tree, pick up a stone, gather whatever plant fiber is and quickly assemble an ax. 2023 will be a pretty strong year for new survival games and you'll need something sharp to crack them.
The year ahead looks promising for the survival genre, and that's great news for fans because 2022 has been a bit of a disappointment when it comes to new survival games. There were a few gems scattered throughout the year, particularly in Early Access, like the vampire survival game V Rising, colony builder Stranded: Alien Dawn, and survival city founder Farthest Frontier. And the Dwarven Fortress Steam release has finally closed the year.
However, while most big games missed their release dates and moved to 2023, mostly due to delays, 2022 felt lighter than recent years for new survival games.
But leave the past behind and look to the future. Christmas is here and we are sharpening our axes for the months ahead. Here are 2023 survival games to look forward to in 12.
frostpunk 2
11 bit studios, of Frostpunk 2 Exactly in 2023 He didn't confirm it, but said the leaked 2024 date was "wrong". In other words, we think that “coming soon” does not mean that we will have to wait until 2025 for the continuation of such an effective game. The post-apocalyptic survival city building and community simulator sequel continues the struggle to warm up on a frozen planet, this time moving from the coal burning age to the oil age. Naturally, the biggest threat to survival is still what you can expect: humanity itself.
Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl
It's actually been a very long road for Stalker 2, which will be the fourth Stalker game. The open-world survival FPS originally planned for 2012 was later canceled, but was re-announced in 2018 when developer GSC Game World reformed it. The latest delay was completely understandable: the developers were based in Kiev and had to relocate to Prague due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We're still hopeful that Stalker 2 will meet its release date in late 2023.
Ark 2
Who's ready for some dinosaurs and Diesel? The sequel to the Early Access survival game hit Ark: Survival Evolved is due out this year, with an animated series both featuring Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel. We don't know much about Ark 2 yet, but the trailer shows what you can expect from Studio Wildcard: lots of dinosaurs and humans roaming on them.
Sounds of the forest
We hope fans of the scary horror survival game The Forest won't have much time to wait for the sequel. Sons of the Forest It was originally supposed to be released in May 2022, then it was delayed to October and is now scheduled for February 2023. You will make a life there to build, breed and fend off bloodthirsty cannibals.
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
The first survival game set in Tolkien's world will take you deep into the ruins of the ancient dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth. Play solo or co-op as you mine for minerals like Mithril, build a base, fight orcs and goblins (and possibly much worse), and craft weapons and machinery deep in the mountains.
Pal world
We named it "Armed Pokémon" because that's exactly what it looks like, to be honest. A bright fantasy world with heavy machine guns and forced labor camps, as well as cute and cuddly creatures to collect. Palworld is weird, but we can't say we're not interested in playing it. Grow food, survive harsh weather conditions, and assemble an army of creatures to fight alongside you. (If any of them die, you can always eat them.)
The Day Before
This is a bit of a wildcard. On the strength of a few long trailers with some intense DayZ and The Division vibes The Day Before skyrocketed to the top of Steam's most wishlisted games, but we haven't heard much about it since. Ambitious: a huge open world with both rural and metropolitan areas, zombies, vehicles, PvP, loot and survival. There are a lot of moving parts to manage and although we hope it will make it, we are not entirely sure it will be as good as it looks.
Nightingale
Like many games in 2022, Nightingale's The Early Access version has also been shifted to 2023. Set in the Victorian Age, the survival and crafting game sees you stranded in a strange land filled with monsters and magic, where you can build a land and craft weapons and gear. Portals to other realms containing valuable resources can be opened, and interestingly, fighting isn't the only way to deal with enemies: you can negotiate truces with specific factions, such as giants, to avoid solving every problem with a shotgun blast.
