Microsoft says it has improved the performance of its Xbox Cloud Gaming service on iPhone and iPad. The cloud game streaming service, formerly known as xCloud, first launched nearly a year ago entirely on iOS and iPadOS. While the web browser version isn't as full featured as a dedicated app, Microsoft is now improving its performance for Apple's mobile devices, despite not being able to launch a standalone xCloud app.

Improvements include optimized video output on iOS devices and optimized network data transmission to speed up the responsiveness of Xbox Cloud Gaming. “You asked for a better iOS experience and as a result, we brought significant performance improvements to all supported iPhone and iPad devices,” explains Nicole Hilbert, Xbox product manager. “With these updates, you will have a smoother and more responsive gaming experience.”

These “significant performance improvements” should also reduce input lag in general, or the delay between moving a joystick or pressing a button and the action appearing on the screen. Microsoft has gradually improved Xbox Cloud Gaming over the past year, and the service is now fully powered by custom Xbox Series X hardware.

Microsoft launched 1080p and 60fps streams for Xbox Cloud Gaming last year.

passed, but the company still does not support 4K streaming, like most of its competitors. Nvidia's GeForce Now RTX 3080 overlay has outstripped both Google Stadia and Xbox Cloud Gaming to deliver 60K HDR at 4fps or 120p at 1440fps.

Microsoft is currently working on a dedicated Xbox app for TVs that will allow Xbox gamers to stream games without a console. Standalone streamers that you can connect to a TV or monitor are also planned, and we're likely to see Xbox Cloud Gaming resolution increased once Microsoft's TV plans are ready.
