A few days ago, it was reported that AMD will disable overclocking on the upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor. This news has now been officially confirmed by AMD.
Robert Hallock, Director of Technical Marketing at AMD, In an interview with Hot Hardware (via VideoCardz)confirmed that the first Ryzen CPU with 3D V-Cache does not support core or cache overclocking. AMD says that Infinity Fabric and memory overclocking are still enabled and are not ruling out overclocking in future models.
In the video, Hallock explained that the voltage did not rise above 1.35V. He goes on to explain that the technology is not mature yet and was developed with gamers in mind rather than overclocking.
The low clocks and lack of overclocking support indicate that the 5800X3D is likely a niche product with low production volume. It would also make sense for AMD to fix issues with pilot production quantities instead of facing any issues when Zen 4 CPUs with V-cache are released or released.
AMD is touting the gaming performance of the 5800X3D. The 5800X base's 32MB of extra 64MB cache is reportedly providing a boost of up to 400% despite the 200MHz lower base clock and 15MHz lower boost clock.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is scheduled to launch on April 20 at $449. This is just one of several new CPUs that AMD will release in the coming weeks and months. They'll likely be the last AM2022 CPUs released before the arrival of Zen 4 CPUs in 4.
