Released on November 19, 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Battlefield 2042 returns in what can best be described as post-modern warfare. But how did we get here? The Battlefield series has evolved significantly over the years. In Battlefield release dates, some games use major world conflicts such as the First and Second World Wars, while others take a more modern or futuristic approach. Let's come to Battlefield release dates;
Battlefield 1942
Battlefield exit date: September 10, 2002

Battlefield 1942 arrived in 2002 and was the game that started it all. This WWII themed shooter emphasized multiplayer and opened up a world of possibilities. Its popularity has not gone unnoticed as Activision released the original Call of Duty a year later. This set the stage for a rivalry that still rages nearly two decades later, even though Call of Duty was originally conceived as a "Medal of Honor" killer.
Battlefield Vietnam

Battlefield Vietnam, released in 2004, wasn't exactly a sequel, but it was much more than a stand-alone expansion. Leaving WWII for Vietnam, the game's combat was more modern and faster, despite being set during a conflict that ended decades ago. While the game didn't hold up brightly today, it did manage to show some of the sadder aspects of the conflict.
Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2 is where the series began to heal itself and began to evolve into the series we know today. Released on PC in 2005, Battlefield 2 is set during a fictional conflict that pits the United States and European powers against China and the Middle East.
It adds attack helicopters and more to the series that offers the same large-scale combat as its predecessors but brings events to a contemporary setting.
Battlefield 2 Modern Combat

Also, Battlefield 2005 Modern Combat, released in 2, marked the transition of the series to consoles. Although the game largely reuses assets from the PC version of Battlefield 2, it actually told a different story but was set in the same conflict. The best version of the game was released on Xbox 360, paving the way for subsequent console entries.
Battlefield 2142

Released in 2006, Battlefield 2142 was the series' first foray into futuristic warfare. The game, unlike the one seen in Battlefield 2, is set during a conflict between a militarized EU and the Pan Asian Coalition. Oh, and it all happened in an ice age after climate change plunged the world into chaos. Battlefield 2142 was the most ambitious game in the series to date, but unfortunately it was released at a time when only PCs could beat it.
Battlefield Bad Company

Bad Company was the first console-only Battlefield game and was very different from what came before. Released on Xbox 2008 and PlayStation 360 in 3, the game told a much more personal story as you followed a group of misfit soldiers on a treasure hunt.

For the first time in the Battlefield series, the game featured a touching, exciting and often hilarious single-player campaign with memorable characters. However, Bad Company brings the famous multiplayer game of the series to consoles, offering a much more important experience than Battlefield 2 Modern Combat.
Battlefield 1943

In 2009, DICE created a sequel to Battlefield 1942, but only released it on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game didn't have a single-player campaign, but it was good to see a more modern version of Battlefield 1942 finally coming to consoles. . While Battlefield 1943 is a completely new game, it has captured many of the features that made its predecessor so exciting.
Battlefield Bad Company 2

Following the success of the original Bad Company, a sequel followed in 2010. This expanded on the original in every way, telling another exciting single-player story and further enhancing Battlefield's multiplayer mode. The game was released on PC as well as consoles, unlike the first entry.
Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 was the first game in the series to truly combine the addictive multiplayer mode with the hardcore singleplayer campaign. It also represented a new beginning for the Battlefield series. In many ways, Battlefield 3 combined everything that worked well from the PC entries with the newer style offered by the Bad Company games.

Released for PC and consoles in 2011, Battlefield 3 was now in competition with a well-established Call of Duty series. The game borrowed from its rival and tells a modern war story. In doing so, Battlefield 3 found a formula that the series still uses today. It also showed what the Frostbite 2.0 engine can really do when it comes to destructive environments.
Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 took the bat from 3 and ran with it. The game was the first game to come to PS4, Xbox One, and PC simultaneously, and in 2013, Battlefield has never looked better despite many issues at launch.
While the Call of Duty series is split into sci-fi entries, each more complex than the last, Battlefield 4 offers a tight, gritty and realistic set of today's war simulations.
Many console players, tired of COD, discovered Battlefield for the first time with Battlefield 4 and offered them an alternative. The game's single-player mode was short and sweet, but the multiplayer mode offered probably the best online Battlefield experience ever.
Battlefield Hardline

In 2015, the Battlefield series entered uncharted territory with Battlefield Hardline. Developed by Visceral Games, Hardline did modern policing instead of modern warfare. The emphasis of the game was on arresting and stealth rather than shooting anything that moved.
While the game offered a fun (but short) single-player campaign and a fresh take on multiplayer, it somehow suffered an identity crisis. More often than not, players used their trigger fingers instead of some of the more subtle or tactical approaches of the game.
While Hardline tries to do something original, its multiplayer battles between cops and thieves remain its defining feature.
Battlefield 1

Released in 2016, Battlefield 1 harks back to World War I, and its opening moments show a heartbreaking reimagining of trench warfare. After that, the game's single-player gameplay was split into standalone "War Stories", each showing a different perspective of the conflict.
Multiplayer was different from previous games, taking a slower, more methodical approach. Players could still take out their opponents with machine gun fire, but many online matches focused on trench warfare, where players fired at the enemy from afar.
Battlefield V

Battlefield V expanded on Battlefield 1's concepts but took the setting back to WWII. War Stories has returned to a single-player campaign location, this time showing the origins of the British SAS as well as several lesser-known sides of the conflict.
Multiplayer offered the boldest and most realistic take on WWII gameplay ever. While Call of Duty WW2 took a more arcade-like approach to its gameplay, 2018's Battlefield V offered a very different experience.
