The Unexpected Dungeon sets the tone for Elden Ring. Although Elden Ring may seem like another Dark Souls game at first glance, it doesn't take long for players to realize how untrue it is. A massive open world, new travel options, and the freedom that players can choose to become Lord of the Hand sets it apart from its predecessors. While there are many incredible dungeons for players to explore, the unexpected really manages to take home the incredible successes FromSoftware has accomplished with Elden Ring: Castle Morne. This dungeon is completely optional and many players will skim through the game without finding it, but it packs all the cool things about the game's level design into one small area.
The Unexpected Dungeon sets the tone for Elden Ring. Elden Ring features 51 gorgeous dungeons to explore, each filled with deadly enemies and an even deadlier boss at the end. Players only have to traverse a few of these dungeons on their way to Lord of Elden, but exploration provides valuable runes for leveling up, as well as powerful equipment and spells that make future encounters much more manageable.

Morne Castle Story
The dungeon in question is Morne Castle. Located at the southernmost tip of the Weeping Peninsula, this place is home to the Misbegotten, a breed of humanoid animals that are often enslaved and treated as lesser beings. Here at Castle Morne, the abused have risen up against the oppressors, and they seem to be succeeding. When the Imperfects arrived, there was almost no sign of life, except for Misborn. Castle Morne is fairly easy to find as players follow the path south, but entry can be a bit more difficult.
What Makes Castle Morne's Level Design Special?
Elden Ring's Morne Castle plot will surely leave fans with mixed feelings, but this dungeon really shines with its level design. This is probably the first time players realize how much verticality the game contains. In many cases, players may think they're at a stalemate, and Dark Souls can do just that. Instead, progression requires players to jump from roof to roof. When first seeing a large castle, players may instinctively go to the tallest tower to reach it, but the dungeon boss is actually on the beach below.
