Despite running its competitions entirely online for the past year, Capcom has decided to cancel the Capcom Cup 19 due to rising COVID-2021 cases and concerns surrounding the Omicron variant. The event scheduled for February 2022 will be replaced by the online season finale event.
This is the second year in a row that the Capcom Cup has been canceled due to COVID, and its replacement will likely mimic the regional format of the Capcom Pro Tour Season Final 2020, which replaced the Capcom Cup 2020.
"As increasing cases of COVID-19, including the Omicron variant, are causing uncertainty and complications globally, Capcom regrets having to cancel the Capcom Cup once again," Capcom said in a statement. “The company didn't come to this decision lightly as we know what the Capcom Cup means to the community and to players who train diligently to qualify. We offer our most sincere apologies to all esports teams. Please know that we share your disappointment as we hope this event will return in a big way, but the health and safety of the players and everyone involved is our top priority.”
Additional information regarding the replacement event for the canceled event will be shared in the coming weeks, but the roster will consist of players who most recently earned a spot in Capcom Cup VIII via the online regional competitions of the Capcom Pro Tour.
Capcom has also abruptly ended the SFL season by canceling the Street Fighter League: 2021 World Championship, which will be held during the Capcom Cup.
