A breakdown of what's coming in the Genshin Impact 4.2 Update 'Criminals Masquerade' update
Anime-inspired action-RPG Genshin Impact will be receiving a pretty significant update later this month, introducing two new playable characters, an expanded region to explore, and a few tough bosses waiting to put the brakes on you.
The 4.2 update, called “Masquerade of Criminals”, brings new areas, bosses and playable characters as usual. The upcoming update will also introduce new events for you to play and earn rewards. Here's everything we know about Genshin Impact's upcoming content.
Genshin Impact 4.2 Release Date
Developer Hoyoverse announced that this latest update will be released on November 8 for mobile (Android and iOS) devices, PC and PlayStation consoles. Since HoYoverse is based in China, players in North America will usually be able to access the new content a little earlier, around 7 a.m. on November 11.
Like the base game, the 4.2 update features cross-progression and co-op functionality, meaning you can play with friends and pick up where you left off on any platform because Genshin Impact is free to play. Beautiful.
Genshin Impact 4.2 New Areas
Teyvat's newest French-inspired district, Fontaine, will expand when update 4.2 is released. The watery region will now include two new eastern regions plagued by bacterial mats, Erinnyes Forest and Morte Region. As you continue the Narzissenkreuz Adventure world quest in the Tower of Ipsissimus, you will clear these mats with the help of the Xenochromatic Ball Octopus, an aquatic creature that hunts by shooting watery projectiles. You'll need to defeat several powerful new enemies, the All-Devouring Narwhal and the Abomination, to bring some semblance of order to the slowly submerged region.
Genshin Impact 4.2 Trailer
The 4.2 release will mark the end of the Fontaine portion of Genshin's main story mission, which first launched in the 4.0 expansion earlier this year. The Traveler and his companions will face their toughest challenge yet as they fight to protect the safety of Fontaine and its people.
Here's a rundown of what you can expect in 4.2, courtesy of HoYoverse:
“Fontaine is on the brink of destruction in the upcoming Archon Quest. As the Primordial Sea Water, which could melt all Fontaines, comes perilously close to flooding the land, the nation must step up to the plate, including Arlecchino, the Messenger of Fatui. The approaching waters also awaken formidable enemies as well as terrifying monsters.”

Genshin Impact 4.2 Banners
With Update 4.2, two new characters will become playable: Hydro Archon Furina, who joins as a five-star Hydro sword user, and reporter Charlotte, who joins as a four-star Cryo catalyst camera user. Furina is more graceful in her fighting tactics, using what appears to be an umbrella and bubbles to execute her attacks with grace. Meanwhile, Charlotte combines her elemental skills to take damaging photos while providing healing on the field.
The first three-week poster cycle for 4.2 will begin on November 8, offering players the chance to draw Baizhu, Charlotte, Furina, and two other unannounced four-star characters.
Once the first three-week banner cycle is complete, the second one will begin around November 29th. This is your chance to add five-star Electro polearm user Cyno, five-star Hydro sword user Kamisato Ayato, and three other unnamed four-star characters to your roster.
Genshin Impact 4.2 Events
The Genshin Impact 4.2 update will also include several limited-time events, such as Thelxie's Fantastic Adventures, a collecting contest to upgrade the clockwork penguin, and Lil' Fungi's Fun-Tastic Fest, which lets you train and command mushrooms to take on powerful enemies. These events can reward you with some leveling materials, EXP books, Mora, and more.
