Biggest Game Releases in January 2024. January is usually a dry month for new game releases, and after the surprise new content drop in the final weeks of December last year, it's a nice break before the gaming year truly kicks off. But this year, the number of high-profile releases to look forward to is comfortably manageable. Yakuza fans will enjoy the next installment of the renamed Like a Dragon series, one of the best PlayStation games of the previous generation will shine on PS5, and anyone looking to get their hands on it will be able to flex their fighting game muscles with the return of Tekken.
Among these big games there are also a few smaller games, indie games and early access games taking advantage of the relaxed schedule as they make their way to PC and consoles. Virtual reality fans can meet Waggleton P. Tallylicker when Bulletstorm comes to life in VR, and Palworld looks like a charming Pokemon analogue. Unless you like your pocket monsters decked out in military-grade gear from head to toe.
You can see all the highlights and the full schedule below, and for a broader look at next year, you can check out GameSpot's list of 2024 games and all the games postponed so far.
Bulletstorm VR (PC, PS5, Quest) – January 18
Can Bulletstorm's inventive combat and inventively crude language survive in virtual reality? That's the question fans of People Can Fly's 2011 FPS will be asking when the game makes the jump to VR headsets and they get back into the boots of space mercenary Grayson Hunt. All the crazy violence of the original game has been preserved for this VR port, and as an added bonus the legendary Trishka Novak will be added as a special playable character. It's almost time to use your energy blades to cut down the mutant hordes.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X|S) – January 18
It looks like it'll be a long wait for the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake to see the light of day, but at least there's a fascinating alternative this month. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown blends 2D action-adventure with anime influence and stylish combos to create a high-energy metroidvania in the age of gods and heroes. All the essential elements of the classic Prince of Persia games are here – platforming, puzzle-solving and time-based powers – and with a striking visual style, this could be one of the first highlights of 2024. It's rare for AAA developers to make metroidvanias, so The Lost Crown is a fascinating experiment for Ubisoft.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered (PS5) – January 19
A remastered version of The Last of Us Part II on PS5 sounds like a great way to start the year, but there's a new 4K fidelity mode to look forward to in addition to an award-winning game with improved load times and “full” DualSense integration There is something else. This new version of the game includes a roguelike survival mode called No Return, and if taking on hordes of Clickers with an arsenal of slowly becoming more powerful weapons sounds like your thing, you're in for a treat when The Last Of Us Part II Remastered launches on January 19 .
Graven (PC via Steam early access) – January 23
Hexen may be a dead franchise, but Graven looks like a fascinating spiritual successor to the fan-favorite spell-slinging action game. Graven, which will be available in early access on Steam in January, is an open-ended journey across three vast regions where every fierce problem can be solved with a little magical firepower. With some RPG elements, puzzles to solve, and plenty of spells to collect for your secret arsenal, Graven can be a fun time for anyone looking for retro-inspired entertainment.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) – January 26
Yakuza and Like a Dragon fans have had a good meal in 2023 with the release of Like a Dragon: Ishin and Like a Dragon: Gaiden, but this year the series has booked a ticket to the sunny shores of Hawaii. Ichiban Kasuga is back and he's teaming up with a legendary dragon for an adventure that could monopolize your entire January idle squad. Gangs of bullies need to be put in their place, the siren call of the gig economy can't be ignored, and this game even has a chance to be a full-on Animal Crossing when it launches later this month.
Tekken 8 (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S) – January 26
Get ready for the next big fighting game! The headliners of 2023 were Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, but in 2024, Tekken 8 laces up its boots and enters the ring. The best-looking game in the series to date, its launch day roster is massive. There's a new emphasis on aggression, with the new Heat Meter system rewarding players for brutal punches. At its core, Tekken 8 is still a story about fathers and sons, but with Leopard-themed Lucha libre wrestlers, a French take on James Bond, and deadly high school bullies, it looks like a healthy one-two punch of serious storytelling and absurd grudge matches that fans have been looking forward to.
Palworld (PC) – January
What is Palworld? Developer Pocketpair has kept a low profile regarding the Pokemon gun game since it was first revealed, but the game will finally be available in early access on Steam in January. Described by the developer as a monster-catching, survival and crafting game, Palworld seems like an ambitious approach to these genres. Players collect exotic creatures and keep the peace with super-effective firearms.
