Sony's latest decision to bring more PlayStation games to PC may be part of how the company got there.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has high hopes for the business, saying he hopes PlayStation games will one day reach “hundreds of millions” in a new interview.

Speaking to GI.biz, Ryan said that reaching 10 or 20 million viewers for a game is a huge success today, but he has his eyes on more factors than that.

“I would also like to see a world where the games we make on PlayStation are enjoyed by tens of millions of people. "Maybe hundreds of millions of people," he said. "You're talking about success with the current console model, a really great PlayStation hit, 10 or 20 million people playing this game."

Ryan pointed out that the music and movie businesses have an “almost unlimited” audience and would like to see PlayStation games grow their footprint.

“I think some of the artworks our studios make are some of the best entertainment ever made anywhere in the world. And to kind of open the door to the wonderful art, the wonderful entertainment that our studios make… Don't get carried away by the 20-30 million audience, it disappoints me.” “I would love to see a world where hundreds of millions of people can enjoy these games.”

Ryan didn't specifically say how Sony plans to achieve this, but one way Sony is expanding the reach of its games is to bring more to PC. Sony has recently acquired PC port specialist Nixxes Software and has a number of PC games on it, including the Uncharted 4 remaster (which will also come to PS5). Sony is also running the PlayStation Now service, which allows people without a PlayStation console to stream games to their computers, potentially bringing the potential audience of PlayStation games to billions.

Microsoft believes there are 3 billion players on the planet and wants to reach them all by pushing Game Pass and cloud gaming.
