The Overwatch League is built and solidified by the legacy of some of its players. One of the biggest names in the league today is closing its division before the fifth season kicks off on May 5.

San Francisco Shock tanker Matthew “super” DeLisi announced his decision today, ending his four-year career in the Overwatch League. One of the most popular players in the league since his debut in 2018, the super has been a mainstay in the Overwatch community for over five years. He signed for Shock at the age of 17 before he was even eligible to play.

Super became one of San Francisco's cornerstone players after qualifying to play in March 2018. He was a critical part of Shock's championship wins in 2019 and 2020, leading the team with creative, aggressive main tank play.

Besides his talented game, the super was touted as a face of the Overwatch League thanks to his extrovert personality and communication skills. She has appeared on The Tonight Show twice with Jimmy Fallon to discuss Shock's championship victories and has often served as a vocal ambassador for the league's players.

At the end of 2021, the super has repeatedly expressed his disappointment with the state of Overwatch in his regular releases, even wondering why the developers "abandoned" the game. Despite these disappointments, he was grateful for the experience he had.

"I guess I just wanted to say thank you and thank you for all your support over the past five years," Super said in an emotional video about his retirement. “I will always appreciate everything I did during these five years.”

In a separate post, Super said that the experience of preparing and preparing for the upcoming fifth season "destroyed him emotionally and mentally" and that stepping away from the competition was the best choice for his health.

Super is the most popular Overwatch League player by stream numbers, with 416.000 Twitch followers and 225.000 YouTube subscribers. In Shock's video, he said fans should wait for him to still be with the team and likely move on to the content creator.
