Phil Spencer attended BlizzCon and told fans that Xbox will 'supercharge' Blizzard. Microsoft's head of games said it would "nourish the essence that makes Blizzard unique."

Microsoft's head of games Phil Spencer attended BlizzCon on Friday to address fans following the completion of its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Spencer said Microsoft will empower Blizzard to continue creating the kinds of experiences its reputation has been built on.

“This is my first BlizzCon and it's great to feel the energy in the room,” he said. “Blizzard holds a special place in the gaming industry, and to me… Throughout its history, Blizzard has pioneered and developed many things in the gaming industry, and many of you here today have been a part of that journey.

“Think of Diablo: it pushed the action RPG genre forward. StarCraft laid the foundation for what eSports would eventually become, and StarCraft 2 was a major catalyst for gaming as live entertainment.

“World of Warcraft not only changed the way people developed and supported games, it also introduced a much wider audience to the concept of online community. Overwatch, on the other hand, has reimagined not only the gameplay, but also the representation possible in class-based shooters.”

He continued: “Blizzard's influence is everywhere, and because of its enduring legacy and extraordinary, revolutionary development, with a care and mastery that is incredibly rare in this industry.

“Our commitment at Xbox is to bring more great games to more players, in more places. And now that Blizzard is part of Xbox, we will nurture the essence that makes Blizzard unique.

“By empowering our new colleagues with a culture of trust, engagement and collaboration, we will enable them to continue doing what they do best: redefining existing genres, creating new, never-before-seen experiences, and connecting players globally in new ways – in Azeroth, in Sanctuary, in the near future On Earth and beyond.

“It has been a privilege to welcome the Blizzard teams to Xbox, and I am honored to be here to welcome you all to BlizzCon 2023. "After seeing what awaits players, I can say that Blizzard's future is brighter than ever."

The Xbox maker completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion last month.

In completing the gaming industry's (and Microsoft's) biggest deal ever, the Xbox maker has acquired ownership of brands like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Overwatch, Crash Bandicoot and more.

“The number of franchises we have in our portfolio right now is inspiring and daunting,” Phil Spencer told the official Xbox podcast. “I feel like we have to be big stewards of the content that we touch. These are the memories of people on different platforms, in different decades.
