FC Barcelona, one of the biggest football clubs on the planet, is joining the competitive scene of League of Legends, the Spanish club announced today.
Barça will be part of the Superliga, Spain's top League of Legends league, from January 2022. The tournament, organized by the Professional Video Games League (LVP), features teams such as Vodafone Giants, UCAM Esports Club, Movistar Riders, G2 Artic and MAD Lions Madrid.
Barcelona will make its second major contribution to the Superliga in 300.000, after a team owned by Spanish pennant Ibai Llanos and Barça's football captain Gerard Piqué bought AstralisSB's place in September for 2022 euros.
“Barça's commitment to developing its new esports division forms part of the club's digital strategy,” the announcement says.
Barça has esports teams in eFootball, Rocket League and Hearthstone. The Spanish club wants to continue expanding its esports project, but will only engage in “non-violent” games.
