City-building RTS The Settlers closed beta kicks off next week.

Ubisoft's reboot of the long-running series will make an early appearance for some lucky players from January 20-24.

After multiple delays, Ubisoft's reboot of the city-building RTS The Settlers finally has a launch date. The Settlers launches on March 17, and if you can't wait that long, you have a chance to join the closed beta for a few days next week.

After seven Settlers games (and a few side games) between 1994 and 2010, the RTS series has had a pretty tough decade. The eighth game in the series was canceled in 2014 after the closed beta proved to be a disappointment, and Ubisoft has finally announced a reboot with a launch date scheduled for 2019. This was later delayed to 2020 before being delayed once again. Finally, it looks like The Settlers will come to light once again.

When The Settlers arrives in March (I hope this time it's for sure), it will feature skirmish and attack modes, as well as a campaign mode with its story, characters and allies to encounter, and several different biomes to explore and build on.

However, this month's closed beta will only cover skirmish mode for 1v1 or 2v2 matches against other players or AI-controlled factions, with two maps to capture.
