Dead Cells: The Queen and the Sea, the third part of the DLC for the 2018 metroidvania roguelike, is now available on all platforms.

More than three years after Dead Cells came out of the early access mud, the roguelike's third DLC has been released across all platforms. The new expansion, Queen and the Sea, adds two biomes, new enemies, and a new boss. The new DLC has a very nice animated trailer that you can see below.

Both new biomes invite players to partake in some seafaring crap. Infested Shipwreck will take players to a spooky ghost ship that is haunted by "unforgivable eldritch horrors," according to the press release. The second biome, the Lighthouse, offers a time trial element in which players will attempt to rise to safety as fires rise below them and enemies try to slow their progress. These new levels run parallel to High Peak Castle and Throne Room levels and conclude with a challenging new final boss, The Queen. In addition to new biomes and boss, Queen and Sea adds a new pet, Leghugger. This creature can be summoned to assist in tough battles and evolves over time.

The DLC also includes a variety of new weapons. According to the press release, these include “a new Hand Hook that launches enemies into walls, The Abyssal Trident, a treasure hidden deep within the shipwreck and can be accessed through a secret side-quest, and The Queen's Rapier: A powerful weapon that slices. through reality.”

The Queen and the Sea concludes the story told in Dead Cells' previous DLC episodes, The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls. But just because that's the end of the story doesn't necessarily mean it's the end of Dead Cells. In 2019, original developer Motion Twin handed over the ongoing development of new content for the game to Evil Empire, a new studio founded by former members of the Motion Twin team. Motion Twin continues to be involved in the helm of Dead Cells, while Evil Empire is handling most of the development.
