Dragon's Dogma 2 What is Dragonsplague?

Players' nightmare...

Dragonsplague is a type of disease that only occurs in pawns. It can infect any pawn, whether made by a player or created by Capcom.

Dragonsplague warning

When you encounter a pawn with Dragonsplague for the first time in Dragon's Dogma 2, the game will immediately notify you. The message explains how this disease is contagious and can be passed from one pawn to another. There is also talk of a “devastating disaster” that could occur.

How can you tell if a pawn has Dragonsplague?

The pop-up notification is the only direct alert that lets you know if the pawn you summoned/recruited has Dragonsplague. There will be no significant change in a pawn's behavior/attitude and this will not appear on their respective panels. However, there are some telltale signs.

  • red eyes – An infected pawn will have eerie red eyes, which are slightly different from what you normally see during character creation (more on that in the next section).
  • Diseases – If idle, the pawn sometimes coughs, spits, or has a migraine. Migraines have a longer animation, around 15 seconds, which should be noticeable.
  • Not following commands (inconsistent) – If you choose the “Wait” command, i.e. Right on the D-pad or “4” on the keyboard, then your pawns must remain in place. However, this is also somewhat inconsistent, as a main pawn with an illness may stop moving when you tell it to.

Are all pawns with red eyes infected?

No, because some pawns are designed this way by players during character/main pawn creation. If you see a pawn with red eyes while in the rift and you haven't received the initial notification/warning, then those are just red eyes from character creation.

To test this, we loaded a backup save before we received the Dragonsplague notification/warning. We took dozens of red-eyed pawns from the Rift and none of them triggered the notification. Please note, however, that we cannot confirm whether this will be the case in future cases after receiving such notice.

In any case, as we kept getting random pawns, we eventually got the notification/warning – it came from a pawn without red eyes (no discernible symptoms at all). However, the disease is quite insidious. While we were waiting for the support pawn to show symptoms, we suddenly realized that the disease had transferred to our main pawn.

Important: To be clear, you can customize your main pawn however you want, but we don't recommend giving them red eyes. This is to avoid situations where your pawn could become infected, making it difficult to distinguish between red eyes from character creation and red eyes from disease.

Can you cure dragonsplague?

The pawn wearing the same armor as our main character was the one infected when we recruited him. After waiting a few days, our main pawn recovered from the disease. (dragon's dogma 2 dragonsplague)

Unfortunately no, you won't be able to cure the Dragonsplague disease in Dragon's Dogma 2, at least not in the traditional sense (i.e. vials or healing items). These are the only ways to “stop” the situation:

  • impeachment – If you are fast enough, you can dismiss an infected pawn you have just recruited. Just keep your fingers crossed that they don't infect anyone else on your team. Illness is basically like playing hot potato.
  • Death (i.e. defeat by forfeit) – The pawn must be defeated by forfeit, meaning they must die and you should avoid reviving them. If your main pawn is infected, throw him into deep water or let a monster kill him. When you interact with a Riftstone they will respawn. For missing support pawns, you need to search for them by selecting the “View Previously Recruited” option.
  • Don't infect others – The pawn must infect another pawn. For example, let's say you recruit someone with Dragon Plague and they pass the disease on to your main pawn. Your new hire has been “cured.” Now you have to deal with your main pawn's illness (i.e. letting them die and reviving them via Riftstone).

devastating disaster

If you do not heed the warning, you can continue your adventure with the same pawns for a long time. That's when disaster begins!

Once Dragonsplague reaches its final stage, a cutscene plays when you rest in an inn or player-owned house. The pawn's eyes will glow red before exploding in a shroud of darkness. They will be sent back to the rift (i.e. lose) and the entire settlement will be filled with nothing but the corpses of NPCs. Other pawns will also disappear and you will have to recruit them again.

You can see what happened in YouTuber Ruba's video below:

So can you revive everyone?

Dragon's Dogma 2 dragonsplague details and how to prevent it?
In my game, after waiting a few days, some people came back to life, but many remained dead, including quest givers like sven and waldhar.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Dragonsplague can destroy almost any settlement NPC, including those required for quests. Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid or alleviate this predicament:

  • Control pawns before resting in an inn. The disaster cutscene is only triggered when you sleep in an inn/player-owned house. Therefore, you should double check if there are any symptoms in the pawns. To avoid problems, kick them out of your party or, in the case of your main pawn, have them die before they can rest. Note that resting at a campsite in the wilderness is also OK, as it won't trigger the disaster cutscene.
  • backup records – For those playing on PC, you can keep backup saves that you can reload later. You can find your save files at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\\2054970\remote\win64_save.
  • Eternal Wakestone – Alternatively, you can travel to the Sphinx temples. If you can defeat the Sphinx and kill him, you can obtain the Eternal Wakestone. Using this revives multiple NPCs at once and also grants you the “Grim Reaper's Contempt” achievement. You can check all the details in our Sphinx riddles and solutions guide.
  • Just wait (incoherent) – Finally, we've seen discussions on Reddit where players suggest that waiting a few days in-game might help. As user Lightningbutt noted in a Reddit post, NPCs destroyed in the disaster came back to life after a while. However, a few still remained dead. We decided to test this and waited about 20 days in-game. We found that many NPCs, such as Sven and Waldhar, still did not auto-spawn. Therefore, if disaster strikes you during the game, Eternal Wakestone may be your only recourse.

That's everything you need to know about Dragon's Dogma 2 Dragonsplague. Prepare yourself to avoid encountering this disgusting disease. If you encounter it, we hope you are well prepared.
