Venture overview
As his primary weapon, Venture uses a drill that fires short-range explosives that detonate after traveling a certain distance or upon contact with an enemy or object. Drill gives Venture a slightly stronger melee attack than other characters, at the cost of a slightly longer animation. They can be buried in the ground, where they won't be damaged, and will deal damage when they emerge. Venture can also perform a piercing move both above and below ground. Finally, his Tectonic Shock ultimate fires projectiles that cone out from underground, damaging enemies in their path.
Venture abilities
- Smart Excavator: Launches a seismic charge that explodes after a short distance.
- Burrow: Go underground and become invulnerable. Deals damage when you spawn.
- Drill Strike: Dashes forward, pushing enemies back. Can be used underground with reduced cooldown.
- Clobber passive: Fast melee deals more damage.
- Explorer's Determination: Using abilities grants temporary shields.
- Tectonic Shock ultimate: Sends out damaging shockwaves.
Dive in, dive out
Venture is similar to Reaper, with all of its abilities and attacks being close-range. This means that if you really want to succeed in Venture, you need to constantly get inside the enemy team, but you also need to have an exit plan to get out if things don't go your way. Luckily, Venture has two move abilities: Drill Dash and Burrow. Drill Dash launches Venture forward and deals damage when you hit an enemy. Burrow, on the other hand, allows Venture to go underground, where you cannot take damage and deal damage when you get out. Depending on how long you've been fighting and whether the cooldowns of these abilities run out during that time, you'll generally want to keep one for going in and the other for going out.
Burrow is definitely better for the exit since you are invulnerable while underground. The most important thing to know about this ability is that there is a short animation when Venture goes underground. You may still take damage during the animation for about a second after activating the ability, so it's important not to wait too long to try to disengage. Additionally, Venture's passive gives them temporary shields after using an ability, so you can deal some more damage.
Aim for his feet.
Venture's primary fire on his Smart Excavator launches a short-range explosive that explodes after it travels far enough or if it hits something. You can maximize your damage by landing direct hits, but since the projectile has some travel time, it can be difficult to land them consistently. One way to avoid this and guarantee the explosion hits is to shoot at their feet or a nearby object, such as a charge. The explosion has a small radius, so you still need to get pretty close with your shots, but you don't need to be perfect.
Tectonic Shock
Venture's ultimate, Tectonic Shock, is a very powerful ultimate attack that deals damage over a wide area. You get four shots that go underground, travel outward in a cone shape, and damage enemies it reaches. Since it goes underground, you can use it under shields and surrounding objects like a charge. Most damage and support heroes can be killed in two to three shots if they are at full health, while high health heroes like Bastion can be killed in as many as four shots. The best time to use Tectonic Shock is when enemies are grouped up and taking some damage, so you probably won't want to start a teamfight with it, but hold them until you get the hang of it.
Other Venture tips
- Venture's melee attack deals slightly more damage, but he also has a slightly longer animation than other heroes, so make sure you don't lock yourself into the animation in a dangerous situation.
- Venture gains temporary shields when using his abilities, but it doesn't kick in until you go underground for Burrow, leaving you defenseless.
- Drill Dash can be used while in Burrow, but deals significantly less damage.
- When you exit the burrow, you can hold the button to charge the output. Deals more damage, but gives enemies a second to get out of the way.
