Electronic Arts has announced that it is making a mobile Lord of the Rings game, which will be a free-to-play collectible RPG called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.
The publisher has so far been shy about the details and has not released any footage or gameplay info apart from this one:
The game is, as the image suggests, being made in partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises, and according to Fredrica Drotos, Middle-earth Enterprises' chief brand and licensing officer, "it will only be inspired by Middle-earth, as described in JRR Tolkien's literary works."
Heroes of Middle-earth will apparently feature "immersive storytelling, turn-based combat, deep collection systems, and an extensive character roster" from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The gameplay will offer us social and competitive gameplay, featuring battles in various stories known from Tolkien's works.
EA has not provided a release date for the game. However, if you're already craving Lord of the Rings content, Amazon's prequel series The Rings of Power is due out in September, and many new characters have already been introduced.
