Evercore Heroes is a team-based PvE MOBA with other players. It will enter the closed beta period next month.
Evercore Heroes looks like a MOBA, but it's not played like that.
It is a team-based competitive action game where instead of attacking other teams, you roam the map to level up your heroes and prepare to defend your base against waves of monsters. It features a variety of playable heroes with abilities inspired by Riot and Blizzard games, and is also where some of its lead developers come from.
This type of bending PvE game was tested by a number of players last year, but will go live as a closed beta on June 20. Evercore Heroes will become a free-to-play game when it's fully released, which developer Vela Games expects to be by the end of the year.
To enter the closed beta, you'll need to purchase one of the three installer packs from the Evercore Heroes site (opens in new tab), which includes a special battle pass, instant hero unlocks, a spare beta key for a friend, and a selection of skins and cosmetics.

Evercore Heroes' installer packages look like this:
- Founder ($20): Founder battle pass, 1 friend key, Lotus, Sydian
- Legend ($50): Everything in Founder's Pack plus Blink, Luumtech Blink legendary skin, legendary beta Magigraph, $10 currency, exclusive Discord role
- Evercore Hero ($80): Everything in Legend pack plus 2 extra friend keys, Cynder, Celestial Cynder legendary skin, legendary Cynder Magigraph, Celestial Cynder legendary emote, and extra $5 currency
Founder's battle pass includes exclusive skins, emotes, voice lines, and in-game currency and does not expire. Players who purchase any pack will receive the heroes Beko, Fyn, Shade and Zari when they log into the game.
Josh Wolens spoke with Vela Games developers at the Evercore Heroes preview (opens in new tab) last year about their goal of expanding the definition of competitive gaming. Evercore Heroes aims to emphasize co-operative gameplay and avoid the frustration of being crushed by a dominant opponent, without direct PvP.
This was evident in the three games I played during a recent preview event. My four-man team lost every game, but that was because we couldn't quite keep up with how quickly the other teams were clearing goals. Our team composition may not be as synergetic as the others, or we may have misused so many abilities that we fell behind in the race to collect Luum, the source that determines your score. No player or team has directly prevented us from winning, which is one of the main reasons developers want to make such a competitive game.
Each match is a challenge where you must work with your team to level up, power up your abilities and collect Luum. There are unique objectives and bosses that work like MMO encounters scattered across each of the game's maps. In one fight, I played a support hero and had to balance healing my team and a rock that, when fully healed, significantly weakened the enemy. In another scenario, two DPS players had to fire, focusing on specific enemies to quickly light the torches and prevent more creatures from attacking. Each objective puts pressure on your team of a tank, support and two DPS to combine your unique abilities (all with low cooldowns) and withstand a global event where everyone defends their Evercore from waves of enemies.
Evercore Heroes will begin with a healthy roster of 16 heroes split between three roles. Vela Games says it's still looking for matchmaking ways to match players who are testing new heroes with like-minded people. One of the key tenets of the game is to avoid the toxicity that can occur when everyone on a team has conflicting goals. Some people might be determined to win, while others might just want to make fun of a certain hero. Matching players for these purposes is an ambitious idea that will definitely need a lot of playtesting to refine, but after three losses that were surprisingly fun to play, I'm interested in seeing it try.
Evercore Heroes' closed beta kicks off on June 20, and there's currently no date for when it will make its way into the full, free-to-play game.
