If you've encountered crates in Fortnite, you've probably noticed that historically you and some of your friends have required you to stand still and scan to access the goodies inside. All that changed with the introduction of keys in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, which must now be collected in order to open safes. The crates are filled with much better loot this time around, but you'll need to do some research for these new crates. Here's how to get vault keys in Fortnite and then of course how to use them.

Where to find keys in Fortnite?

Fortnite keys are found as random loot anywhere on the map. This means you won't have to go to specific locations and fight for those much sought after keys, but it also means there's no surefire way to find them in any given round. Go with the flow and find your keys, then focus on the safes.

Once you find a key, your map will be updated with a few lock symbols around the island. These represent the locations of the safes. You can go for any of these, but take note of the number of keys you must have. A lock icon with a keyhole means you'll only need one key, but some safes need more than that and are labeled as such on your map.

The number of keys you hold at any point is listed on the right side of the game's UI, next to your inventory. Every safe also seems to have at least one safe key inside, which means you can easily run from safe to safe by opening a few without any idle running on the keys. We've labeled all the vault locations below so you know where to go. If you don't see one of these crates on the map during a match, it has already been opened.

Either way, safes that need more than one key to unlock have even better loot than one-key safes, but even these one-key safes are packed with cool stuff. We've found three rare chests, a ton of ammo, barrels of Slurp Juice, and more in each one we've opened so far, so these crates are clearly better than last season's crates, which tended to yield a handful. now they're rare tier loot instead of the legendary stuff they're distributing.
