WB Games opens limited playtest registrations for Harry Potter Quidditch Champions
The reason for the glaring lack of Quidditch in the controversial RPG Hogwarts Legacy now seems clear: Warner Bros. Games has announced Harry Potter Quidditch Champions, a new game set in the wizarding world and centered on the beloved fictional sport. The announcement tweet also promised “limited playtest registrations” with a form link to get a chance to play the new game, which has yet to be released.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is produced by WB Games, Portkey Games and Unbroken Studios. The second of these companies is working on the recently delayed Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League. WB Games and Portkey Games were behind Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world action RPG that was hugely successful. The game also had good broom-blow mechanics but noticeably lacked Quidditch. Quidditch Champions appears to be WB Games' answer to this shortcoming, but from the game's visuals it appears that the studio is moving towards a more stylized, cartoonish visual style rather than Legacy's more grounded aesthetic.
"Fans have been requesting a Quidditch game for a long time, and we've been working with Unbroken Studios for several years to create a game that lives up to their expectations," WB Games president David Haddad told Kotaku via email. “We're reaching out to fans now and asking players to help us build this experience by inviting players to Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.
Signing up for the Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions playtest feels like you're being questioned about your knowledge of Harry Potter and the video game by a millennial with a Death Eater tattoo on their chest carrying a baby named Draco. The form asks you to rank your interest in Harry Potter and the games set in its world from zero to 10. 0 means “You don't like Harry Potter and you will never play a Harry Potter game”, 10 means “You like Harry Potter and will play any Harry Potter game”.
In addition to stating your commitment to the Harry Potter universe, you're also asked what your motivation for playing games is.
After filling out the form, you are given the option to sign up for the official Harry Potter: Champions of Quidditch Discord, which provides a few more details about the upcoming game. You'll be able to play as one of four positions (Chaser, Seeker, Beater, and Keeper), and it seems the game wants you to master one of them, just like in some kind of hero shooter game. You will also be able to customize your Quidditch player.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is also apparently in production at Unbroken Studios for "a few years" and "currently in limited playtests". It requires an internet connection to play, which makes you think you can't play offline against bots, but there seems to be some sort of matchmaking to help you find other teammates. JK Rowling is mentioned several times in the FAQ on her official Discord, a stark reminder that we can't escape the real-life witch or the haphazard world she created in an Edinburgh cafe many years ago.
Interestingly, the studios decided to put "Harry Potter" in the title instead of Hogwarts. Harry Potter Quidditch Champions. This could either mean that the game will include the main character in some way or that they did some Google searches and saw that Harry was more wanted than Hogwarts. Either way, more money will go into Rowling's pockets.
