The Federal Trade Commission has accused Epic of illegally collecting data from children and tricking millions of players of all ages into making unintentional in-game purchases.
Since then, Epic and the FTC have reached a settlement that will allow the Fortnite manufacturer to pay a $520 million settlement. $275 million of that figure will settle the trade commission's claim that Epic violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting information from Fortnite users under the age of 13 without their parents' consent.
The remaining $245 million will be set aside for Fortnite FTC refunds to consumers who have been manipulated by the developer's use of "dark patterns" to trick players into purchasing in-game goods unintentionally.
How can you find out if you're eligible for a Fortnite FTC refund?
Today, December 20, Federal Trade Commission , detailed who it plans to refund when the “Fortnite FTC refund” begins. The guidelines are as follows:
- Parents whose children made an unauthorized credit card purchase on the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018
- Fortnite players who received in-game currency (V-Bucks) for unwanted in-game items (such as cosmetics, llamas, or battle tickets) between January 2017 and September 2022
- Fortnite players whose accounts were locked after disputing unauthorized payments with credit card companies between January 2017 and September 2022.
