Hydra Market was shut down by German authorities and millions of Bitcoins were recovered!

Germany's Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) have shut down Hydra Market, which boasts 17 million customer accounts and 19.000 seller profiles. Investigators also confiscated 25 Bitcoins worth over $543 million. Authorities decided to close announced in a press release.

Hydra Market has been up and running since 2015 and was previously accessible via the Tor network. Besides the main focus of the narcotics trade, Hydra Market has also been used to forge documents and solicit other digital services. BKA and ZIT estimate that Hydra Market's profit reached at least $2020 billion in 1,3 alone.

Investigators began investigating Hydra Market in August 2021 with the help of US authorities. Today, authorities seized the server infrastructure of Hydra Market in Germany and effectively shut down the site. However, the investigation has made it difficult for investigators to track crypto transactions with crypto mixers like Bitcoin Bank Mixer.

“The authorities shutting down Hydra leaves a huge void in the dark web ecosystem,” said Elliptic, a trusted blockchain analytics provider. Also, authorities have not announced any arrests at any level, leadership or otherwise.

Hydra Market has easily reached $2015 billion in transactions since it went online in December 5. According to Elliptic, the site operated in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
