If you want to maximize your MLB The Show 22 scoring opportunities, you will need to choose the best basic running controls for your playstyle.

MLB The Show 22 can be as close to a simulation or more arcade-style as you want, depending on the type of baseball you want to play. The amount of precision you have over the game can give you an edge when it comes to choosing the best control scheme for every aspect of the game like shooting and hitting. When it comes to operating the bases, the options are a bit more limited, making the choice all about your personal button preference.

MLB The Show 22 – Baserunning Controls

MLB The Show 22 has limited options when it comes to controlling basic runners, with different control options focusing on which buttons you're comfortable using as opposed to having better technique on bags. There are two different control schemes with a third option that lets the game handle it for you.

Default Controls

The default control scheme uses buffers to advance or return all base runners. To select individual base runners, you have to point to the left stick where the individual base runner is located and then press the corresponding face button to choose which base to send (on Xbox A, home is home, B is first, Y is second, and X is third). It's the same if you're running a beat or trying to play during a beat. This is my preferred control scheme because it makes more sense to me to point the stick at the runner I want to control and use the face buttons as the base. The classic control scheme works just as well, but it unnecessarily puts the D-Pad into the situation.

Classic Controls

The classical scheme also uses buffers to advance or reverse all runners. The difference is that to control an individual base runner, you select the base runner using the corresponding face button (determined by where they are at the bases) and then use the D-pad to choose which base to send to.

Automatic Baserunning

As the name suggests, this option will have game control basic runners for you. This is for more casual or newer players who may not yet understand the situational base run. When using Auto Baserunning, if you feel like you need to override what the game is doing for you, but with Auto Baserunning turned on, you can't control an individual baserunner, but the buffers will still advance or reverse all runners.
