Although Sony has bought Bungie and Haven in the past two months, it still plans to buy more studios.
Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said on the Official PlayStation Podcast that Sony's first-party success has allowed it to invest in more studios.
“We're in a really good place with PlayStation Studios right now and that's been the case for the past few years,” he said. “The critical success and commercial success of their games has allowed us to invest in creating more content.”
“We grow our studios organically and grow through acquisition. We bought five studios during 2021. We're in talks with Bungie and we're planning more. This puts us in a virtuous circle. It's a cycle where success brings more success."
This organic growth has seen Sony acquire a total of seven studios since the start of 2021, for a total of 18 in-house developers, with its acquisition of Destiny developer Bungie for $3,6 billion in February.
