Many changes have already been confirmed for the next season of League of Legends, and Riot Games isn't going to stop just yet.

Cody “Codebear” Germain went into detail about some tweaks to the game's ranked system before and after the season in a new Quick Gameplay Thoughts blog post today.

First, he mentioned the team's plans to try some new decay configurations in the next few months due to the high order LP decay rates. For example, after a break to the league returning players found that matchmaking became very unpredictable due to the speed at which their MMRs dropped during their absence from the game.

“At high MMRs (Master tier and above), degradation rates act like timers to keep the best of the best on the edge of their games for a long time,” Codebear said. “However, this clock is ticking too quickly and may be pushing players where they really don't belong.”

In the few months before 2022, Riot will be experimenting with different degradation patterns to see what works, while also allowing players to provide valuable feedback in the process. The developers will try to find a balance to keep players playing to maintain their rank, while also giving players a hiatus a chance to re-warm up and find their way again.

Codebear also said that this year's ranking resets have been very smooth on a player basis. As such, resets will be made more powerful so that “players can push their skills to new limits and provide more sustainable growth and accurate system feedback.”

“Big problems have equally big solutions,” and Riot is ready to tackle any issue before the new year begins.
