Scarlett Johansson sued an artificial intelligence app for cloning her voice in an ad. An AI-generated version of Scarlett Johansson's voice appeared in an online ad without her consent.

VarietyScarlett Johansson is taking legal action against an artificial intelligence app developer for using her name and likeness in an online ad, reports . Advert, Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar It was for an AI image editor called and featured an AI-generated version of Johansson's voice.

According to Variety, the 22-second ad shows Johansson backstage during the filming of Black Widow, with Johansson actually saying, “What's up, guys? "I'm Scarlett and I want you to come with me." But then, as the ad moves away from Johansson, an AI-generated voice meant to sound like the actress's voice says: “It's not just limited to avatars. You can also create images and even AI videos with text. “I think you shouldn't miss this.”

Variety reports that at the bottom of the ad, Convert Software, the developer behind the app, added the following text: “Images produced by Lisa AI. “It has nothing to do with this person.” Representatives for Johansson told Variety that the actress was never a spokesperson for the app and that her attorney, Kevin Yorn, was “handling the situation in a legal capacity.”

“We don't take these things lightly. “As is our usual course of action in such cases, we will deal with this through all legal means we have,” he said. Neither Yorn nor Convert Software responded to The Verge's request for comment on the nature of the legal action.

As artificial intelligence becomes more accessible, we are bound to see cases like this in the future. While musicians are already struggling with voice cloning that makes it look like Drake is releasing a new single or Johnny Cash is covering Taylor Swift, deepfake technology is making it possible for Tom Hanks' AI-created likeness to appear in a dental plan commercial without his consent.
