Icelandic confetti is still being swept away after the world saw EDward Gaming's first World Championship victory. The biggest League of Legends event of the year brought in a large number of spectators and, as expected, the final series of the tournament broke more viewership records.
According to Esports Charts, the 2021 World Championship finals between EDG and DWG KIA reached peak audiences of just over four million excluding Chinese platforms, setting a new record for League esports. The series has reached five exciting games, with each game going back and forth between the two finalists.
Before that, T1's classic semi-final series DWG had the highest viewership for the 3,5 Worlds, with an impressive peak of 2021 million against KIA. Many watched to watch Faker battle against ShowMaker in a symbolic rite of "passing the torch" between the two superstars.
However, the previous highest record for the League was held by T2019 and G1 when they faced off in the 2 World Championship semifinals. This series hit a stunning 3,9 million peak viewership but was eventually beaten by one of the best five-game series we've seen in a long time.
