The Worst Games of 2023. There were a lot of good games, but there were also bad ones.
This year has been a pretty good year for games. There were many gems, like a massive game like Baldur's Gate 3, highly anticipated sequels like Spider-Man 2 and Armored Core 6, and of course, complete flops.
Today, starting from this point, we are sharing some of the worst games that will hit the stores in 2023. Whether they were doomed from the start, launched horribly, or simply tried to milk their already existing fanbase, this year has witnessed some doozies.
We may have missed out on truly terrible offerings from smaller developers, but these are the seven games that come to mind when considering what the biggest flops of 2023 are.
Payday 3
Okay, we admit it: Payday 3 is not a terrible game. But given the fact that it basically didn't work when people actually wanted to play it, and now no one seems interested in playing it, yeah, it makes our list.
Payday 3's biggest problem is that it's an online-only game that launched with non-working servers. Even if you managed to get into a game, you were soon subjected to the wrath of unplayable lag issues. Moreover, the game had terrible optimization for players on PC, so many players were struggling on all fronts.
Fortunately for fans, the game's situation has improved. However, we could argue that this makes it one of the worst games of the year, as the player base returned to Payday 2, leaving the sequel in the dust.
forspoken
There's nothing worse than a game that has the potential to be great but fails to deliver. That's exactly what happened with Forspoken. While the gameplay is good, the story is lackluster at best and the humor misses the mark on all fronts. This game's only saving grace is its open world, where you can avoid any story moments.
Considering how much excitement this PlayStation exclusive game generated before its release, it was always clear that it would fall short. However, what players got at launch was far from what even the most seasoned players expected. If you can find this game on sale, maybe it's worth playing once. But at full price, there's no way you can justify playing it.
The Walking Dead: Destinies
When games don't work, they're guaranteed a place on lists like these. But when a game is a licensing title that wants to capitalize on an already established franchise like The Walking Dead, they'll probably be featured there.
All you have to do is take a look at 10 seconds of gameplay of The Walking Dead: Destinies to see how poorly done this game is. From static cutscenes, broken gameplay mechanics that allow you to dodge enemy attacks, and graphics that feel like they're from the early 2000s, please, we recommend giving this one a miss, even if you're a The Walking Dead fan.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong
The rule of two doesn't just apply to the Sith in Star Wars. It's also about bad video game licensing, but it's much worse than Rise of Kong Destinies. Yes, this game is based on the iconic movie creature King Kong, but you might not notice that at first given the terrible graphics.
Bad graphics are usually something you can ignore. But when they're paired with incredibly repetitive gameplay, noticeably lacking cutscenes, and an insulting price tag, we won't look any other way.
No gamer should waste their time playing Skull Island: No gamer should waste their time playing Rise of Kong – unless you're actively looking for a bad game to play. And if this is you, then we wish you good luck.
redfall
Players expected Redfall to be a co-op dream in the style of Left 4 Dead, but with vampires. What they got was a buggy mess inside a thin world with static cutscenes that seem to be a trend in bad games this year.
Redfall's situation was so bad that its player base plummeted, despite Bethesda's efforts to keep the game alive by fixing problems and planning new content. What makes this game one of the worst this year is that it's a full-price game, one of the most expensive games on our list, and it doesn't live up to its potential at all.
Don't buy Redfall unless there's a significant improvement, and there's potential for that to happen as Bethesda says it's committed to making things right again. By the way, if you need to play this game, check out the subscription price on Game Pass.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
Yes, we will do this. Gollum is our worst game of 2023.
This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone because the Lord of the Rings game has been slaying the internet since its release. But if a game is bad, all the criticism can be justified, and yes, Gollum is bad.
The biggest sin this game commits is that it's boring. It's a glorified chore simulator and there's really no reward in doing what you're asked to do. Visually everything looks bleak and Gollum looks as if he's just asking for an end to his suffering. There was a text mode that produced some good laughs though, so hey, you caught us there, Gollum.
At the end of the day, Gollum will live on in infamy as one of the most hated games in recent memory, and with it will likely garner a fan base of hardcore defenders. Who knows, this notoriety might even be enough to greenlight a sequel. Our thoughts: This should probably be left as a one-shot game.
