Alan Wake 2 delivers incredible excitement and a tense atmosphere as you try to escape the Dark Place. Along the way, you'll find a few perks that can really increase your chances of survival. Our guide explains the locations of the 2 Words Of Power perks when playing Alan Wake 27. These are scribbled drawings that glow and provide perks that make your character stronger. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.
Where to find Words Of Power while playing Alan Wake 2?
Alan Wake 2 Words Of Power are the glyphs you'll find as you explore the protagonist's levels in The Dark Place. There are arrows that usually only appear when you shine your flashlight on surfaces, directing you to a scribbled drawing. When you see someone, look at them and position yourself appropriately so that the screen flickers. After a few seconds, the perk should unlock.
Note that each Word of Power glyph belongs to a specific category. For example, Words of War and Words of Weapon have combat-oriented perks, while Words of Repair and Words of Help offer restorative properties. Likewise, at the time of this writing, we cannot confirm whether Words of Power perk types are set or random for each player. However, we noted the types/categories we got based on our gameplay.
How to uncover more WoP?
It's possible to uncover more Alan Wake 2 Words of Power, as well as other collectibles such as Echoes and even hidden loot. While playing as Alan, you can hear someone muttering in each level. Follow this audio to meet Tim Breaker. This sheriff is played by actor Shawn Ashmore, a nod to his role in Remedy's previous game, Quantum Break.
Whenever you meet Tim, talk to him and take a look at the map in his room. Doing this marks collections and points of interest on Alan's own map. Note that we experienced some UI bugs (i.e. icons remained on our map even though we had already obtained these rewards).
Initiation 2: Casey – Words of Power
There are six Words of Power in the Main Plaza in this Dark Place version of New York. Even if your goal is to go to the metro, we recommend that you do some exploring to get these advantages as well as other beauties.
Word of Power 1
- Type: Fix
- Location: At the end of the alley where you encountered Casey, you'll see a glowing arrow leading to a narrow section. It just spins around. However, if you look at the wall above the door, you will see the glyph.
Word of Power 2
- Type: Fix
- Location: Check the trash can area outside the Talk Show Studio.
Word of Power 3
- Type: Action
- Location: Go to Draft Street, located in the eastern part of the main plaza. Then shine your flashlight on the rail above you.
Word of Power 4
- Type: Lamp
- Location: Use your Angel Lamp on the pole to the right of the one leading to Caldera Street Station (don't go down to the subway yet). The pole will disappear and you will find the steps leading to the High-Line Station. Continue until you mark the Break Room (i.e. save point). When you exit you will see an arrow to the left, pointing to a glyph just below.
Word of Power 5
- Type: Lamp
- Location: Use your Angel Lamp on the pole to the right of the one leading to Caldera Street Station (don't go down to the subway yet). The pole will disappear and you will find the steps leading to the High-Line Station. Continue until you mark the Break Room (i.e. save point). When you exit you will see an arrow to the left, pointing to a glyph just below.
Word of Power 6
- Type: Combat
- Location: In the area of 5, check the street for a police car. When you're ready, use your Angel Lamp to change your environment. A few Taken shadows will appear, so eliminate them. You should be able to safely control the interior wall of the building right next to the police car.
Initiation 2: Casey – Words of Power (Metro-Subway)
There are a lot of Words Of Power in the subway level when playing Alan Wake 2. This is further complicated by the fact that the twisting tunnels are almost labyrinth-like, and when you exit a passage you find yourself in a more remote area. We also recommend getting all the benefits during Initiation 2 – Casey, as some tunnels may become inaccessible later.
Word of Power 1
- Type: Pistol
- Location: Use your Angel Lamp and go down to the Caldera Street Station subway. Before heading deeper into the darkness, look to your right to see an abandoned train on the tracks. Use your Angel Lamp once again to alter reality and then unlock this perk.
Word of Power 2
- Type: Help
- Location: Just after passing the first subway save point, you'll see some construction materials left behind. Spin around and control the arrows to get this advantage.
Word of Power 3
- Type: Lamp
- Location: Just after passing the Collapsed Tunnel (i.e. the big one), you'll see two narrow tunnels side by side. In the other part there is a car that will disappear if you use your Angel Lamp. You can then enter a small room with a glyph on the wall.
Word of Power 4
- Type: Combat
- Location: When you see the Derailed Train scene appear on your screen, look above you to see this drawing.
Word of Power 5
- Type: Action
- Location: Several of these Alan Wake 2 Words of Power perks are found in quick succession. After changing the Derailed Train scene to the Torchbearers, you should be able to make your way through the wreckage and you will find yourself in a small room with an Echo. Go down the stairs and you will see three glowing arrows pointing to a wooden board. Smash it with a melee attack to reveal this glyph.
Word of Power 6
- Type: Fix
- Location: Immediately after getting 5, proceed to the next area where there are lots of Taken shadows. Kill them and look at the wall behind the ticket booth with the “Missing” graffiti.
Word of Power 7
- Type: Lamp
- Location: After exiting the previous area, you will arrive at Shrine Street Station. To your left is a partially flooded section. Check the arrow and the far wall for this advantage.
Word of Power 8
- Type: Pistol
- Location: As you progress through Shrine Street Station, you will see several abandoned trains standing side by side. While outside the train, use the Angel Lamp to make the light flicker so you can label this hand-drawn doodle.
Word of Power 9
- Type: Action
- Location: Once you enter the End of the Line scene, use the Murder Cult option to see an Echo unlocking the Summoning Rite theme. Choose the Summoning Ritual to alter reality, which reveals an exit on the right side (facing the direction you came from). The next room has this Word of Power on the wall.
Word of Power 10
- Type: Fix
- Location: After getting Word of Power 9, go up the steps and you'll come to a Break Room/save point. The other door leads back to the previous area where the Collapsed Tunnel scene was. But before continuing, check the wall behind the metal door to see the glowing inscription.
Initiation 5: Room 665 – Words of Power (Arka Sokak/Rooftops)
The next chapter in Alan Wake 2 where you can get more Words of Power is Initiation 5 – Room 665. Although your goal is to enter the Oceanview Hotel, the only passage available is through the streets and rooftops to the west.
Word of Power 1
- Type: Help
- Location: Check the alley to the left of the Oceanview Hotel before heading to the alley and rooftop section. You will see this painted on the wall of a building.
Word of Power 2
- Type: Help
- Location: As you explore the southern part of the roof area, you should see glowing arrows pointing to this glyph painted on a metal board.
Word of Power 3
- Type: Lamp
- Location: This one is a bit tricky. In the northern part of the roof area there is a door with two triangles pointing down. To the side, you'll see a glyph above a water tank. It is possible to gain this advantage when looking at the water tank from this point. However, if you walk through the door and look at the water tank from below, the game may not register this.
Word of Power 4
- Type Gun
- Location: After tagging the perk from the water tank, do not go through the door in front of you. Instead, check the left side and go down the metal gate/staircase where you'll hear Tim Breaker humming. At the bottom of the passage, look for a crawl space where you can find this other glyph.
Initiation 5: Room 665 – Words of Power (Oceanview Hotel)
There are several Alan Wake 2 Words Of Power in the Oceanview Hotel. Be warned that the layout is a bit confusing as there are rooms that connect to other floors and you have to switch scenes to progress further.
Word of Power 1
- Type Battle
- Location: Get the key to Room 225, which is a save point and acts as a passage to Room 104. Go out into the corridor and go to Room 224. You will see an arrow pointing to a wooden plank. Smash it with a melee attack and look at the bathroom wall to see this glyph. It's a little hard to see because of the color, but it's there.
Word of Power 2
- Type: Items
- Location: You'll eventually arrive at the Oceanview Hotel Ballroom. Take a look at the bar counter top to see this drawing. Note that Words of Things tend to be very rare due to the perks you can unlock; one of these upgrade your inventory offers the tool.
Word of Power 3
- Type: Combat
- Location: This particular Word Of Power can be seen when you look through the glass above the doors leading to the second floor emergency exit. At the time of writing, we can't confirm whether you can get this a little earlier at the hotel level. We only saw this after completing the main objective. Until then we had used the Devil and Climax stage options.
Initiation 8: Zane's Film – Words of Power (The Poet's Cinema)
The Poet's Cinema has four more Alan Wake 2 Words of Power. We recommend you get these benefits during this special episode.
Word of Power 1
- Type: Fix
- Location: Along the right side of the second floor of the lobby when you enter the theater.
Word of Power 2
- Type: Action
- Location: On the ground floor of the cinema, enter the bathroom on the left. After passing the cabins there is a storage room and you should see it on the ceiling.
Word of Power #3
Type: Items
Location: After exiting the Theater Hall and taking the Night Out Stage, switch between themes to change your environment. The police car should shine a light on a door and by changing themes you should be able to get in. Then, when you get to the roof, go to the spotlights and turn around. You'll see this scrawled on a wall at the bottom right. This is one of the extremely rare Word of Stuff glyphs.
Word of Power 4
- Type: Lamp
- Location: From where you found the Word of Stuff glyph, go to the opposite side of the roof. You will hear Tim Breaker humming. Check under the metal passage on the right side for a crawl space, this will lead to the Breaker's small room. To see this drawing, turn around and look at the water tank.
A note on the point of no return
We don't want to spoil all the important details, but we need to mention the point of no return in Alan's story arc. Read the spoiler section below at your own risk.
Initiation 8- After completing the Zane's Film section, your next main objective is to return to the Parliament Hotel. But before you do this, you are told to place Alice's Photographs in a shoebox located in front of the statue in the main square. We recommend finding all of Alan's collections before proceeding any further.
In our game, we had already completed Saga's individual arc. Therefore, placing Alice's Photos in the shoebox caused the game to automatically switch to Saga's perspective, implying that we had to pass her own point of no return. Next, the game will switch back to Alan's point of view, which means you are on the path to the conclusion of the campaign.
In any case, these are the Words Of Power perks you will encounter while playing Alan Wake 2. We'll let you know if we find more, so stay tuned.
