Blizzard's ambitious survival game project, codenamed Odyssey, was recently canceled after six years of development. This cancellation coincided with news of Microsoft's upcoming layoffs in its gaming division and the departure of Blizzard President Mike Ybarra.
Odyssey: Blizzard's Undiscovered New Universe
Launched in 2017 by Blizzard veteran Craig Amai, Odyssey promised a survival experience set in an entirely new universe. It aimed to develop the genre by taking inspiration from games such as Minecraft and Rust. Over the years, Odyssey's development team has expanded, but the project has encountered significant obstacles, particularly related to the game engine.
Engine Woes: From Unreal to Synapse
Initially, development of Odyssey was done using Epic's Unreal Engine. However, Blizzard later switched to Synapse, its own internal engine used for mobile games. This change was intended to support larger maps and higher player capacities. But according to Bloomberg, Synapse was described as “slow to come together,” leading to serious technical difficulties.
Microsoft Acquisition: A Missed Opportunity for Odyssey
Following Activision Blizzard's acquisition by Microsoft, there was hope among the Odyssey team to return to the Unreal Engine. Blizzard has even considered increasing recruiting for a potential release in 2026. However, these plans were shelved when it was determined that Synapse was not ready for production.
Blizzard's Perspective on Odyssey's Cancellation
“While decisions like these can be difficult, experimentation and risk-taking are an important part of Blizzard's history and the creative process,” said Blizzard spokesman Andrew Reynolds. He highlighted the challenges involved in launching new ventures in the gaming industry, emphasizing that ideas from Odyssey could influence future games or become games in their own right.
Reflecting on the Complexities of the Games Industry
Odyssey's journey from conception to cancellation reflects the complex and often unpredictable path of game development. Despite these obstacles, Blizzard's commitment to innovating and exploring gaming has remained unwavering, a tribute to the ever-evolving nature of gaming as a dynamic industry.
