Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 looks so big that you'll probably start a new game. You won't need Phantom Liberty to experience the biggest changes to Cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk 2077's first and only expansion pack is coming out next month, but the bigger deal is likely to be an even bigger "Update 2.0" that comes with it. CD Projekt Red has been talking about how its 2020 RPG has reworked skill trees, armor systems, and police AI since Summer Game Fest, but today's Opening Night Live stream is the first to work on Update 2.0 and new toys in the Phantom Liberty expansion. It made us look.
Probably the biggest overhaul in the bowels of Cyberpunk is the skill trees that will have new perks to complement the playstyles that replace the old minor percentage upgrades. We see a few of them in the trailer: the projectile deflecting ability for katanas (a godsend if you've ever tried to play with knives), new executions for melee weapons, a skyshot, a power ability that lets you literally throw corpses, and a nifty pistol skill similar to Cassidy's Deadeye ultimate.
These new perks that will apply to the vanilla Cyberpunk experience are separate from a new "Relic" skill tree exclusive to Phantom Liberty owners. These look overpowered to say the least – the Mantis Blades upgrade that lets you leap towards targets like a Left 4 Dead Hunter, or the Gorilla Arms equivalent that turns your fists into gravity hammers.
If you're considering whether to start a new Cyberpunk 2077 record in anticipation of Phantom Liberty, I'm officially convinced it's a good idea. It looks like it would be possible to refactor an existing character into new skill trees, but the skills seem so different that gradually unlocking them is less jarring.
Not to mention other changes that, in theory, will make old tasks feel new. Update 2.0 also adds car combat, which actually means a few different things: V can now use weapons while driving, hack other cars Watch Dogs-style to make them spin out of control, and some cars can actually be equipped with weapons (although this last one could be a Phantom Liberty thing). Filling these car chases, the newly developed NCPD AI will chase, set up barricades and try to get V off the road. CDPR has come a long way from teleporting police ambushes.
While the Update 2.0 improvements sound refreshing, I don't think I'd be signing up for the third game without the new Phantom Liberty expansion. It looks like players will be able to access Phantom Liberty content midway through the main story. I wouldn't push this point too far before heading to Dogtown, as CDPR says you'll find "new clothing, weapons, cyberware, and more" there.
I played the beginning of Phantom Liberty at Summer Game Fest and was thrilled to discover that the expansion's new location, Dogtown, is actually an add-on to the tragically underutilized Pacifica district of Night City. While we don't know how long the expansion will last, my 90-minute demo gave the impression of being a standalone story similar to The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is out September 26.
