The new city built by billionaires. The 'California Forever' website showcases the city the tech billionaires are trying to build.
An obscure website tries to justify building a new city near San Francisco with beautiful pictures and promises of a better life.
Flannery Associates, the company behind the land grabs near San Francisco that turned out to be a secret plan to build a city with hundreds of millions of funding from wealthy tech leaders, has revealed a website for the planned city. Flannery's parent company is called California Forever. His site is full of sunny pictures of a walking green city by the bay.

The text states that surveys say residents want what they want – good local jobs, walkability, safety, etc. He then makes vague promises not to ruin nearby agriculture and to solar farms. At the bottom, the site promises to "help solve" walkable neighborhoods and infrastructure problems, and "protect and support" the nearby Travis Air Force base.
The New York Times reports that Jan Sramek, the former Goldman Sachs trader who founded Flannery Associates, first persuaded Stripe CEO Patrick Collison and then others, including LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, to invest. They gradually purchased more than 50.000 acres of land around an Air Force base in Solano County, which the Times said was the poorest in the area.
According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Solano County Administrator Bill Emlen said the company told him they were investing in family farms and planned to "continue grazing and farming." “Our policy has been that large-scale housing development takes place in cities,” Emlen said.
The Times writes that California State Senator Bill Dodd, to whom Sramek and a political adviser turned to apologize, said he thought the group had "got off to a bad start" if it wanted to build a new city.
On its website, almost certainly AI-generated images of the theoretical city (look at the setting sun in front of a mountain), it shows a sunny green town sitting amidst rolling hills, farms, and windmills. The text describes a walkable city with solar farms, open fields and “well-paying local jobs”. The company even says it's "interested" in looking for ways to support home ownership using down payment assistance.
Other than that, the website contains no details on population, size, or how the city will sustain itself. A FAQ on the site addresses potential concerns by vaguely addressing issues such as the need for improvement of the North Bay Aqueduct. A significant portion of the site is also devoted to California Forever's plans to persuade locals through surveys and a local advisory board.
