It looks like Minecraft's Massive Update 1.20 Trails and Tales will be released very soon
It looks like Minecraft's Massive Update 1.20, also known as the Trails and Tales update, is coming out very soon, as developer Mojang has started releasing pre-release snapshots of the update.
If you're not familiar, Minecraft has a somewhat peculiar patch release cycle. Usually major updates like 1.20 are previewed in 'snapshots' – beta versions of the patch are available to all Minecraft: Java Edition players. New snapshots are released every week, usually for several months, each adding a handful of new features that will be included in the upcoming update.
Once the snapshots are complete, we get the preliminary versions that show the developers have finished adding new features and have made the final tweaks and bug fixes. We are at this point right now as Minecraft 1.20 pre-version 1 has just been released. You can see the patch notes on the official site (opens in a new tab), but it's pretty dry and technical - perhaps most notably the fact that an almost 11-year-old bug has been fixed, the latest in a chain of fixes for older bugs.

Pre-releases continue until major bugs are fixed, and then we get release candidates that are final test releases to make sure there are no major issues before the actual update is released. The time between the first pre-release and the final launch of the update is usually quite short. For example, there was a little less than three weeks between the first pre-release of the 1.19 update and its actual launch.
That's all long story short: Minecraft 1.20 will probably be released in all versions of the game within the next month. That could take longer if Mojang discovers some major technical issues at the last minute, but precedents suggest we'll dive into Trails and Tales in early June.
