Sony plans to release the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature for the PlayStation 5 "in the coming months". The long-awaited VRR feature will synchronize a display's refresh rate with the PS5's graphics output, reducing visual distortion, screen tearing and frame rate issues. You will be able to use the new VRR feature even in games that do not officially support it. The news came as Sony announced the availability of new PS5 and PS4 software updates.
“In many PS5 games, gameplay feels more fluid as scenes are rendered instantly, graphics appear clearer and input lag is reduced,” the PlayStation team writes in a blog post. “Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR via a game patch, and future games may include VRR support at launch.”
Sony said it will also allow PS5 owners to apply the VRR feature to games that don't officially support it. “This feature can improve video quality for some games,” Sony explains. “If this results in unexpected visual effects, you can turn this option off at any time.” A second option to apply VRR to unsupported games will be available on PS5 in display and video settings.
This could be a great way to improve games like Elden Ring, which started with performance issues on the PS5 version of the game. Sony didn't mention an exact release date for the VRR beyond "the coming months," but the company has publicly beta-tested previous system software updates, so testing will likely begin soon.
Sony is also releasing new PS5 and PS4 software updates today, including the ability to create or participate in open or closed parties on PlayStation consoles. The PS5 also provides some UI improvements on the Game Base and Trophy cards, and mono audio for the headphones. PS5 owners in the US or UK will also be able to test out the new Voice Command feature that lets you find and open games or apps and control media playback with your voice.
