Psyonix has announced that it will bring voice chat back to Rocket League in an update scheduled for May 9. Voice chat had been removed from Rocket League since update 14 released on September 2021, 2.04. Announcement is an official from the blog post came.
According to the blog post, voice chat will be on by default and all you have to do is plug in a microphone to talk. From a new Voice Chat tab in the Friend List, you will have access to two audio channels, Party Chat and Team Chat. Once in the tab, you can switch between all channels from the Main Menu or by pressing pause in-game. Players will be able to “fine-tune the Voice Chat experience” by customizing the chat options in the Settings Menu.
When someone speaks it will show they are speaking with a green icon above. Or, when they don't have a microphone or mute the player's name, they will appear in Mute with an X next to it.
Psyonix explained how each chat will work and how you can use them.
Party Chat – The perfect way to talk to friends! Players with Voice Chat enabled enter the Party Voice Channel when they create or join a Party. As the connection between the games continues, players will be able to communicate both inside and outside the matches.
Team Chat – For those who want to talk to their team! Players with Voice Chat enabled enter the Team Voice Channel when they join a team in a match. This connection will automatically end when the game is over, then restart when you join a new match.
Audio In/Out – These device options are available on PC and allow players to easily switch audio sources, whether you're rocking the broadcast microphone or the controller headset.
Voice Chat Method – Open Mic is the default Voice Chat setting so players don't have to press unnecessary buttons when trying to communicate. Players who prefer to use Push to Talk can enable it in the Settings menu. These players will need to connect the Push to Speak button to something suitable for them from the Controls tab.
Mute – We also know that everyone uses Voice Chat in different ways, so Gamers will also be able to Mute people on their Voice Channels. This can be done in the Voice Chat tab by selecting their name and selecting Mute.
Psyonix previously said that it has removed voice chat from the game "because the voice chat system is not up to modern standards". Some players were even experiencing “performance issues” when using voice chat in-game.
