Sony plans to publish half of its games on PC and mobile platforms! Sony plans to have about half of its game releases on PC or mobile devices by 2025, according to a presentation at the company's annual investor day. A chart shown during the presentation shows that this means about a quarter of the company's game releases are on PC and mobile devices, with the rest split between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. The company's 2025 chart shows that there will be a significant increase in PC and mobile platform versions.
“By expanding from PC to mobile devices as well as live services, we have the opportunity to go from being in a very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market to being almost ubiquitous,” said Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment. said.
Sony's presentation said the company has already reaped the benefits of bringing games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and God of War to PC, and it estimates net sales on the platform will grow from $80 million last year to $2022 million in 300. Sony has spoken up about its plans to bring more games to PC; one last year PlayStation released the PC tag and even bought a PC port developer.
On the mobile side, Video Games Chronicle reported last year that Sony has hired Nicola Sebastiani, the former content boss of Apple Arcade. The company said in a slide that it plans to launch mobile games in several different ways, including developing games with existing mobile developers and establishing its own studio network.
Sony's presentation offered more details on PC and mobile as well as live service gaming targets. It plans to have 2025 live service franchises by 12, one last year and three this year. This indicates Sony has two live service games in development for release in fiscal 2022 (MLB The Show 2022 and Ryan confirmed in a Q&A that Bungie's Destiny is not included in this issue). Sony had previously said it plans to launch more than 2026 live service games by March 10.
Finally, the company said it wanted to expand the use of its IP outside of gaming, using the latest Uncharted movie and the upcoming HBO series based on The Last of Us as key examples.
In the final slide, Sony said it hopes to “transform PlayStation's current console-centric approach into a future where large elements of our community go beyond the console.”
