The beginning of the year is often a time when players recharge themselves before returning to their daily routines. This time is no different, and the active user numbers on Steam are proof of that.
According to SteamDB, the popular gaming platform had another stunning record of active users on January 2, with 27.942.036 players online at the same time.
Said number comes just two months after users broke the previous record of around 2021 million active users in November 27,4. It's also a leap forward in terms of players who were active at the time. In November, when the previous record was broken, 7,8 million players were actively playing. This time, more than 8,2 million players were in the game.
What's more, it should come as no surprise that most of the 8,2 million playing at the time of the record were spending their time playing the oldest and most beloved games on the platform. CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Dota 2 were among the top games that consistently held the list of the most popular games on Steam.
Only two of the games released in 2021 (Football Manager 2022 and New World 2) found themselves in the top 10 games played when the record was set in January.
