The long-awaited VALORANT update is coming. VALORANT has become one of the most global first-person shooters of all time, from the Chinese teams' recent domination of the VCT to the fierce rivalry between North and South America. But despite the game's global presence, no continent has ever had a server of its own.
After three years of playing the game with incredibly high ping and creating countless Reddit threads and tweets to appeal to Riot, the VALORANT community in Africa is finally getting a server. VALORANT executive producer Anna Donlon announced today that Riot will finally open servers in South Africa, serving a portion of the world that has never been able to experience the game with low ping.
VALORANT players in Africa wanted a local server from the very beginning of the game's lifecycle and in the meantime had to connect to servers in Europe and the Middle East. The biggest problem is undoubtedly for players in the south of the continent, as many countries in North Africa can connect to European servers with stable ping.
But players in South Africa had no choice but to play with low network latency.
“I come from South Africa and our lowest ping to EU servers can range from 150ms to 200ms depending on where you are in the country,” one Reddit user said in a post last year. “We get tormented on these servers every day because we love the game, but sometimes when the enemy has more bullets than you, he gets really bent over.”
Many other players in the comments mentioned the need for a server in Cape Town or Johannesburg. The new South African server will undoubtedly benefit many players, even if they do not live in these two major cities.
The South African server will be provided by Carry1st, a Cape Town-based company.
While players from West Africa and the central part of the continent are still struggling with high ping, an additional server in this part of the world is a step in the right direction, especially as VALORANT in general becomes an increasingly global title.
When it comes to esports, there is no African organization on the VALORANT Champions Tour, although one of the regions is named EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Despite efforts for inclusion, the region mostly features teams from Europe. This South African server opens the door to accessibility for African gamers and the possibilities are endless.
