Xbox Series X Vs Series S: Which Sells Better? Thanks to the Xbox leak and other sources, we now have a better idea of the sales split between the two devices. The massive Xbox document leak revealed a lot of interesting information about Microsoft's gaming plans and other information, including a breakdown of Series X and Series S sales. It looks like Microsoft's prediction that the cheaper, less powerful Series S would be the better-selling device came true.
IGN reported that one of the leaked documents showed that, at least in the relatively early days of the platform's lifecycle, the Series S accounted for 74,8% of sales, with the Series X accounting for 25,1%. This information is accurate as of early 2022, but the mix appears to have changed significantly since then. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said on Twitter/X that the Series S accounts for “just over half” of the total sales of the new Xbox consoles in the US.
The Series S has jumped out to a larger lead over the Series X, due in part to limited supply of the Series X early in its lifecycle. Price is also an important factor.
The Series S is priced at $300, and price can be a very motivating factor in buying, so it's not a big surprise to know that it sells better than the $500 Series X. A $1 Series S version with a 350TB hard drive is also available now.
In 2021, Microsoft's Phil Spencer told Kotaku that he expects the Series S to outsell the Series X, partly due to its price. “I think our expectation throughout the generation will be that price is really important and the Series S will sell more,” he said.
According to information from the big leak, Microsoft is reportedly announcing additional Xbox consoles, including a mid-generation refresh and a new Xbox, in 2028. The leaked documents are more than a year old and Microsoft said “a lot has changed,” but this may very well be spin and damage control.
“We will share actual plans when we are ready,” Spencer said in response to the leaks.
