Apple does not want to give up its share so easily.
In a move that would surprise no one, Apple has filed an appeal in an antitrust lawsuit against Epic, the makers of the Unreal engine and Fortnite. Despite winning nine out of ten charges against him, Apple's only loss was quite heavy. That's enough for Epic though Apple says it's their win as we called it a big win.
Apple's loss is that it was ordered to allow mobile apps to redirect consumers to external payment methods. This allows apps to avoid the 15-30% share of earnings they currently have to give Apple.
Apple's appeal includes a request to lift the injunction that allows developers to add in-app links to payment websites outside of the Apple ecosystem. This means that Apple wants to wait for all appeals to be resolved before being forced to comply with the court's ruling - potentially adding years before this decision takes effect. As of now, the injunction will begin on December 9.
“The requested stay will enable Apple to protect consumers and its platform as the company works on the complex and rapidly evolving legal, technological and economic issues that any revision to this Guide will require,” Apple said.
Epic has already appealed the decision, seeking more than a single victory (and pondering the meaning of the word button).
