Epic Offers Great Incentives to Its Developers. The new 'Now On Epic' program could help Epic improve its legacy game offerings to better compete with Steam.
Epic Games announced a new program on Monday to encourage developers to bring their old games to the Epic Games Store. Under its new “Now On Epic” program, Epic will give developers 100 percent of “net revenue from user spending” on products offered through the program for six months, according to a blog post. Typically, Epic delivers 88 percent of revenues while keeping 12 percent for itself, and after six months the revenue share will return to that level.
To be part of the program, developers must commit to publishing at least three games that were released before October 31, 2023 and are “currently live on another third-party PC store (or included in a third-party subscription service).” Alternatively, if a developer doesn't have three products that meet these criteria, Epic says they should "bring all products that are live." If you want to wait a bit to decide whether you want to include your games in the program, that's okay; Epic says developers “can sign up for the program through December 31, 2024, and all eligible products must be published on the Epic Games Store by June 30, 2025.”
The new program could help Epic better compete with Valve's Steam store, which already offers large catalogs of games. But players looking for these older games may have already built up large collections on Steam, so even if an older game appears there because of Now On Epic, they may not have much reason to switch to Epic's store.
The Now On Epic program joins several others to entice developers to bring their games to Epic's storefront, including the First Run program, which allows developers to keep 100 percent of revenues in exchange for exclusivity and self-publishing tools. Epic has also spent large sums of money over the years giving away free games to entice players to use Epic's store more often.
