Sony, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan is retiring. He announced that he is leaving his position and will retire in March 2024. Hiroki Totoki will become Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in October 2023 and will then take over as the company's interim CEO on April 1, when Ryan will officially retire.
Jim Ryan Retires “After 30 years, I have decided to retire from SIE in March 2024. “I have enjoyed the opportunity to do a job I love, working in a very special company, with great people and incredible partners,” he said.
Totoki continued: “I express my sincere gratitude to Jim Ryan for his outstanding achievements and contributions throughout his 5-year career at Sony, including the huge success of the launch of PlayStation 30.”
Ryan has been in the news lately for trying to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In particular, he claimed that Call of Duty becoming a Microsoft exclusive product would harm the gaming community and that the acquisition would be anti-competitive as a whole.
Ryan also oversaw the launch of the PS4 at a time when Sony was experiencing its most dominant years in the video game industry with the massively successful PS5. It also reversed its decision to shut down the PS3 and PS Vita digital storefronts following fan backlash, pushing Sony into a new initiative involving more games-as-a-service. Ryan has overseen many of Sony's highest-profile acquisitions, including Insomniac Games, Bungie and Housemarque.
