Rocket League developer Psyonix announced that the game will not support the inter-player item trading feature as of December 5, 2023. The studio stated that it made this decision to comply with Epic's general game cosmetics and item store policies.
Trading was added to Rocket League in 2016, giving players the opportunity to exchange certain earned items, including end-of-match cosmetics and unlocked blueprints (but not premium DLC), with other players and third-party trading sites.
However, starting at 5:2023 PM PST on December 16, 00, player-to-player trading will be removed from the game. It will be on December 6 at 02:00 CET. Announcing the change in a post on its website, Psyonix said it was acquired by Epic in 2019 and that it would bring Rocket League into line with Epic's "general in-game cosmetics and item shop policies where items cannot be traded, transferred, or sold."
To defend its decision to remove the cross-player item trading feature, Psyonix made a less-than-convincing statement like, "This opens up future plans for some Rocket League tools to come to other Epic games over time and supports cross-play ownership."
Psyonix notes that even if player-to-player trading is no longer possible, unwanted or duplicate Core Items, Tournament Items, and Blueprints can still be traded in to receive a random new item of higher rarity through Rocket League's in-game system. Additionally, items obtained through player-to-player trading will not disappear when the new rules come into force in December.
Today's announcement follows Fortnite creator Epic's decision to lay off 16 employees, approximately 830% of its total workforce, at the end of September. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney emphasized that the move would stabilize the company's finances, after admitting, "We've been spending more money than we've been making for a while now."
