Do you know the games added to PC Game Pass in January 2024? Whether it's marauding zombies or robbing turnips, there's a little something for everyone this month.
The holidays may be over, but Game Pass is the gift that keeps on giving. So bundle up, hunker down, and place your coffee mug on that USB-powered coaster thing your mom got you for Christmas, because it's time to stave off the January blues with a little midwinter play.
January is another good month, featuring the return of some not-so-friendly ghost faces on Game Pass, as well as a Day One release for one of gaming's most unlikely heroes.
Hell Let Loose (January 4)
Unlike Battlefield's glossy and glorified take on the First and Second World Wars, Hell Let Loose is an FPS that takes itself much more seriously. The 50v50 online WWII shooter leans much more towards simulation and realism, so a single bullet can kill you and you often won't know where it came from.
Beyond the intense and restrained gunplay (where teamwork is vital), there are interesting mechanics like garrison building and tactical planning that set Hell Let Loose apart from its more arcadey peers.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (January 9)
The epic final installment of the history-spanning, Templar-stabbing action-adventure series may have been released more than three years ago, but it's packed with tons of side quests to complete and map markers to clear as you traverse Southern England Viking-style (yes, that means lots of bloodshed). It's still one of the biggest games on the market.
At the core of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is an excellent story shaped according to the decisions of the players and a cast of excellent characters such as kings, warriors and even Gods.
We Happy Few (January 11)
"Bioshock but in retrofuturistic '60s England" is the greatest opening pitch we've ever heard for a game, and while We Happy Few doesn't quite capture the seminal storytelling prowess of Irrational Games' classic, it's improved considerably since its shaky launch five years ago.
Set in the town of Wellington Wells, where an oppressed population wearing creepy white masks is forced into drug-infused 'bliss', you control three characters whose stories become intertwined as you unravel the mystery of this strange and visually striking world. Stealth, survival, and a dash of combat offer plenty of freedom in how you tackle this dystopia.
Resident Evil 2 (January 11)
The first game of Capcom's latest Resident Evil remake project is arguably still its best – with fixed camera angles and tank controls, it transforms the survival horror classic into a terrifying, gorgeous over-the-shoulder horror experience. The remake deserves credit for making zombies scary again, following you through doors, dragging themselves towards you once incapacitated, and taking lots of elusive bullets to actually die.
The legendary Raccoon City Police Station where most of the game takes place is a satisfying and frightening puzzle box, Mr.
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank (January 18)
A tax-evading turnip didn't seem like the most likely premise for one of the best old-school Zelda-like adventures of recent years, but that's exactly what 2021's Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion gave us.
The long-awaited sequel arrives this month, and Turnip Kid teams up with his old pickle friends to pull off a bank robbery. It feels a bit more two-stick-y and faster-paced than its predecessor, and there's also a roguelite element to it, but if the original is anything to go by, it should be one of the most effortlessly entertaining games of the year. Here are the January 2024 PC Game Pass games…
