Those who updated their AMD GPU drivers this week and then entered some CS2 may encounter an unpleasant addition to their Steam accounts - a VAC ban.
Users began reporting that their accounts were receiving mysterious VAC bans for no apparent reason late this week while playing CS2, but a correlation was quickly made and those affected updated their AMD GPU software to the October 12 version 23.10.1.
In Thursday's update, AMD added Anti-Lag+ support for CS2. Designed to “reduce input-to-response latency” and provide Radeon users with a more responsive gaming experience, the feature uses Dynamic Link Library (DLL) redirection and frame alignment within the game's code to improve response times.
However, VAC does not differentiate between the Anti-Lag+ feature and common cheating software that uses DLL hacking and bypassing to allow players to cheat. As a result, VAC locks the account, bans it, and prevents the player from making any CS2 matches.
The problem has become so widespread that Valve was forced to comment, warning AMD users not to enable Anti-Lag at all in a tweet dated October 14. “If you are an AMD customer and playing CS2, do not enable Anti-Lag+,” Valve said, adding that they will work to identify accounts that accidentally triggered VAC once AMD releases an update that fixes the issue.
AMD may have to remove Anti-Lag+ support for CS2 entirely until such a fix is found, as the feature's technology is used in a number of titles and may not be easily tweaked to compensate for CS2.
Until then, those running Radeon GPUs will need to open the AMD Radeon Software panel and manually disable Anti-Lag+. This can be done by finding CS2 in the Radeon Settings menu or by pressing Alt+L via the AMD gaming overlay.
Reactions to the discovery were mixed, with those who have been VAC banned will now likely have to wait until AMD fixes the issue. “They better turn this around quickly,” said one user affected by the false ban. Others were able to avoid an early ban, but were unhappy with how vague Steam Support was throughout the communication process.
On the bright side, some users were at least reporting improved FPS and performance on their Radeon cards after a rocky CS2 launch. We hope AMD fixes the issues and gets the players up and running as soon as possible.
