Biggest Games to Release September 2023. September is a great month to get some much-needed sleep if you're Green Day, and an even better month for those looking to indulge in a few different kinds of new games. While October is shaped as a juggling of new releases that we haven't seen in a few years, September is not to be underestimated with what it has to offer.
The most anticipated game of this month is Starfield, which has been in production for years, exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Starfield, Bethesda's big return to the AAA scene, is the biggest game of the current Xbox era and a massive tour of the universe where players will be free to search for their destiny among the stars. Will you be a brave explorer sailing to the final frontier, a space pirate living a treacherous life, or a diplomat wading through the politics of various factions? The choice is yours when Starfield launches in early September.
Mortal Kombat 1 is sure to be a big hit for fans of fighting games who want to dive into wild fights. The semi-reboot Mortal Kombat 1, which marks new ground while preserving the franchise's history, looks like it's going to have a bloody good time, with its engaging storyline, distinctive brutal combat, and resolute refusal to believe the letter "C" exists.
Another game you should check out is Baldur's Gate 5, coming to PS3 in September. After its successful launch on PC – and the Xbox Series X|S version is on the way – Baldur's Gate 3 is where you can explore fantasy realms, fight huge monsters and if you manage to shoot D20 brings its magic to PlayStation 5 as a game where you can turn a squirrel into bloody giblets.
On a lighter, but no less intense note, EA Sports takes the field with EA Sports FC 24, the first entry in the new football franchise. This is the start of a new series breaking away from decades of FIFA games, but football fans shouldn't fret because you can still expect familiar gameplay, new improvements and tons of official club support in this game.
Other highlights this month include Cyberpunk 2077's ambitious expansion Phantom Liberty, Bloodborne-like Lies of P, and The Crew Motorfest.
Starfield – September 1 / September 6
In the words of the late David Bowie, there is a Starfield waiting in the sky! With more than half of the year behind us, Microsoft needs a big win for Xbox, especially after Redfall has proven to be a forgettable exclusive when it launches in early May. Enter Starfield, Bethesda's massive space exploration adventure with huge momentum behind it right now. While the pressure is real, Bethesda looks set to create its next big franchise with a cosmic experience that could become a must-have game on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers can access Starfield at no extra cost on the first day, and start playing on September 1 if you purchase a Premium Upgrade.
Baldur's Gate September 3 – 6
Baldur's Gate 3 was one of the biggest hits of the year on PC, and finally PlayStation fans will be able to experience Larian Studio's RPG masterpiece. If you're looking for a powerful single-player experience that combines classic Dungeons and Dragons fantasy with a choice-driven narrative, this spin on Forgotten Realms is not to be missed. Rounding out the D20s since its full launch on PC, and if you're planning to get the game on PS5, it's here to help you get a head start on one of the best games of the year. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis – September 7
Final Fantasy VII actually became a franchise within a franchise with thousands of stories to tell, and the latest was a mobile spin-off. Ever Crisis is an episode-structured single-player experience that covers key elements of the Final Fantasy VII timeline, including both the original game and spin-offs like Crisis Core and more. Probably the biggest attraction here is that the game will explore the origins of Shinra's Soldier program, an event that will allow players to discover more about Sephiroth before he descends into evil.
NBA 2K24 – September 8
Another year, another hardwood ride in NBA 2K24. 2K's annual sports franchise has been a huge commercial hit every year, and for the 2023 release, the studio says basketball gameplay is more seamless and a more fine-tuned attention to detail. As usual, you can progress from rookie to MVP in MyCareer mode, but if you prefer a more nostalgic basketball game, you can always assemble a team of legends in one of NBA 2K24's many other modes available.
Payday 3 – September 21
Payday 3, one of the most anticipated sequels of the year, once again tasks you with committing the biggest bank robbery and escaping the long arm of the law with your ill-gotten gains. The legendary quartet of thieves is back in business, and New York City is ready to empty its pockets, and when you hit Wall Street with a few friends by your side, it's time to prove that greed is good. You'll need to work hard and plan wisely to escape with as much loot as possible, but each victory is designed to be a rewarding experience that adds more experience and skill to your arsenal, while also increasing your personal wealth.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty – September 26
It's been a long road to salvation for Cyberpunk 2077, and it ends with the arrival of the spy-thriller DLC, Phantom Liberty. The only expansion pack for Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty is more than just extra story missions set in a new area of Night City. With this expansion, CD Projekt Red has fundamentally overhauled Cyberpunk 2077, leaving almost no aspect of the game intact, focusing on a full sequel to this dark future playground of overpowered corporations, reckless body modifications and cyberghosts roaming the streets of Night City.
EA Sports FC September 24 – 29
It's a new era for football games as EA is leaving the FIFA business and moving forward with its own version of the beautiful game. Although FIFA membership has expired, EA Sports FC 24's matchday roster includes more than 19.000 fully licensed players, 700 teams and 30 leagues. From the UEFA Champions League to the Bundesliga, fans will be able to experience what EA calls the most realistic football game ever, built on many cutting-edge technologies and designed to deliver an authentic experience.
