A new trailer for God of War: Ragnarok detailed some changes to enemy design and combat mechanics ahead of the highly anticipated sequel's release in early November.
At the start of Ragnarok, Kratos has both the Leviathan Ax and the Blade of Chaos weapon, giving players much more combat options than they had at the start of the previous game. This made the enemy design more complex from the start, with Sony Santa Monica's focus on providing both more variety and more mini-boss battles for you to tackle. As the designer points out in the video below, it's all about balancing "frustration and engagement."
The new mechanic highlighted in the video is about Kratos' use of shields. In the previous game, your shield was single-purpose, blocking damage and giving you dodge options. In Ragnarok, the situation will be a little different. Smaller, lighter shields are better at parrying and give you greater interaction time to repel an attack, but block less damage. For larger shields, the situation will be the opposite.
Updated Atreus and its mechanics in battles to better reflect the character's progress. As Atreus is older and has much more confidence in his offensive abilities, you'll find that he allows you to make long attack combinations and leads fights. His magical abilities also seem to give him an edge in battle.
The latest previews for God of War: Ragnarok highlighted the game's more diverse roster of enemies and efforts to make combat appropriately appealing. In the sequel, new enemies and updated battle mechanics will be waiting for the players.
God of War: Ragnarok will be released on November 9 for PS5 and PS4 platforms.
