Google Announces DDoS Attack Has Been Successfully Stopped. Biggest DDoS Attack Ever!
Google announced that it successfully prevented one of the largest DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks on record, with more than 398 million requests per second (RPS). In making the announcement, Google warned of a vulnerability that could be used to make the attack successful if tried again.
In a new blog post, the tech giant said it had foiled plans to prevent a DDoS attack 7,5 times larger than the largest DDoS attack on record last August. “To understand the scale, this two-minute attack generated more requests than the total number of article views reported by Wikipedia for the month of September 2023,” Google explained.
Google said the problem was a vulnerability in the HTTP/2 protocol, which is designed to allow internet connections to open simultaneous data streams. Unfortunately, unlike the recent Sony attack, a DDoS attack is ripe for exploitation as it can cause a website or online service to be flooded with a large amount of requests, causing it to go offline.
“Unfortunately, features that make HTTP/2 more efficient for legitimate clients can also be used to make DDoS attacks more efficient,” Google wrote. Fortunately, Google confirmed that it had collaborated with industry colleagues, notified them of the vulnerability, and found a solution to prevent it from being exploited again.
DDoS attacks, like all cybercrimes, have many negative consequences that can occur if successful. Losing access to online services to make payments to your local bank, accessing your favorite social media account, or playing your favorite game online, to name a few.
