The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI has finally arrived, giving fans their first look at Rockstar's next big game, set to release in 2025. One of the biggest questions surrounding the game is which platforms it will be available on at launch, and that picture is becoming clearer. Take-Two, said the game will be released on PlayStation 2025 and Xbox Series X|S in 5. So what will happen to PC, PS6 and Xbox One for GTA 4?
We don't have a definitive answer yet on either issue. However, history suggests that Rockstar may eventually bring GTA 6 to PC, even if it's some time after its console debut. What about PS4 and Xbox One? Don't get your hopes up too much.
GTA and Red Dead have a history of coming to PC after console
Grand Theft Auto V, the last major game in the open world series, was released for consoles in September 2013, and it was not until April 2015 that the game came to PC. The PC version of GTA 5 was supposed to be released in Fall 2014 but has been delayed multiple times.
Rockstar hasn't explained why GTA 5 isn't coming to PC at launch, but many have theorized that the studio wanted to focus its efforts on the console version. When the PC version of GTA 5 was finally released in 2015, it also featured the Rockstar Editor, allowing players to record, edit and share videos. The PC version of GTA 5 became very popular after its release as it opened the game to an even wider audience and led to many fantastic and unexpected mods.
Red Dead Redemption II, on the other hand, was released for console in October 2018 and came to PC about a year later in November 2019. However, 2010's original Red Dead Redemption was never released on PC.
PS4 and Xbox One?
As for GTA 6's potential coming to PS4 and Xbox One, at least don't bet on a local release. Rockstar has said that it plans to “push the boundaries” with GTA 6, and it can be assumed that the vision Rockstar has for GTA 6 will not be possible on these older consoles. Some games, like Spider-Man 2 and Starfield, are already exclusive to current-gen platforms, so it would be a safe bet to assume that a game like GTA 6 coming out in 2025 will leave older platforms behind.
There's a possibility that GTA 6 could be played on PS4 and Xbox One via cloud streaming, as the game could be beamed to those consoles without needing sufficiently powerful native hardware. Microsoft is already supporting this as a way to play the most technically impressive games on Xbox One, while Sony is just starting to port PS5 games to PS4.
But the only smart bet for GTA 6 right now is to assume that the game will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, and may come to the PC platform sometime later.
