K-pop group New Jeans this year League of Legends Worlds song will vocalize. The new song was released a week before the start of the esports tournament, 3 October'also will be published.
The 2023 League of Legends World Championship will take place in Korea this year, and to celebrate, Riot has tapped one of the country's most popular bands to perform the annual anthem. Girl group NewJeans, known for their ear-splitting songs like "Super Shy", will be behind the new song. The name of the song is “Gods” and it will be released on October 3rd.
Riot is no stranger to working with big artists for musical collaborations, having collaborated with the likes of Imagine Dragons and Porter Robinson in the past; Last year's Worlds anthem belonged to Lil Nas X, who also performed at the event's opening ceremony in San Francisco. The songs often have an epic vibe to spice up the event, making NewJeans – with its deliberately laid-back vibe – an interesting choice.
“Between Worlds taking place in Korea and the rapid rise of NewJeans, we felt this partnership was destined to be a true cultural celebration,” Carrie Dunn, Riot's global creative director of esports, said in a statement. “Gods” juxtaposes epic and intense production elements with NewJeans’ beautiful and powerful vocals, reflecting both the grind and the triumph that awaits our players at Worlds.”
The news is part of an ongoing influx of K-pop in gaming, which includes a BTS collaboration with Fortnite, Blackpink performing within PUBG Mobile (and releasing a related music video), and Riot's own virtual group K/DA.
As for Worlds, the long tournament will begin with matches on October 10 and end with the final on November 19 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
